Scaling MEMS for AI Infrastructure: High-Performance Micromirrors for Optical Circuit Switching
ABSTRACT
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is creating unprecedented demands on data-center networks. As GPU clusters scale to tens and eventually hundreds of thousands of processors, the electrical switching infrastructure connecting them faces increasing challenges in power consumption, bandwidth, latency, and system complexity. Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) offers an alternative architecture in which optical signals can be dynamically routed without repeated optical-to-electrical conversion.
MEMS micromirror arrays have long been recognized as an attractive technology for optical switching, but conventional MEMS fabrication and actuator architectures impose limitations on mirror size, angular range, actuator force, device density, and manufacturability.
This presentation will examine how advances in MEMS process technology and high-aspect-ratio electrostatic actuation can overcome these limitations. Using Optical Circuit Switching as an example, we will discuss the relationship between MEMS device architecture, optical performance, scalability, power consumption, and system-level economics. The presentation will also explore how a new generation of MEMS devices could enable larger, higher-radix optical switches for AI and cloud data-center applications.

Curtis Ray is VP of Business Development at Omnitron Sensors, a MEMS technology company developing advanced micromirror and optical switching technologies. He works at the intersection of MEMS, photonics, semiconductor manufacturing, and commercialization, with a particular focus on applications in Optical Circuit Switching, LiDAR, and emerging optical systems.
Curt has spent much of his career building and leading technology companies, serving in senior engineering and executive roles including Vice President of Engineering and CEO. His experience spans the transition of complex technologies from early-stage development through productization, manufacturing, customer engagement, and commercialization.
