Advancing Sustainable Semiconductor Innovation: NY Creates’ High NA EUV Lithography Center

ABSTRACT

The transition to semiconductor manufacturing at the 2 nanometer (nm) node and beyond promises significant gains in chip performance and efficiency, but also introduces new resource, energy, and infrastructure challenges that underscore the importance of collaborative industry sustainability efforts. NY Creates, located in Albany, NY, is the owner and operator of the nation’s largest, most advanced, accessible semiconductor R&D center—the Albany NanoTech Complex—hosting 3,000 experts focused on accelerating innovation to commercialization in critical areas with a commitment to industry sustainability. Creates’ Albany NanoTech Complex is home to its High NA EUV Lithography Center, offering standard numerical aperture (NA), and soon, high NA EUV lithography R&D and prototyping capabilities for development at the 2nm node and beyond that do not exist anywhere else within an accessible semiconductor R&D ecosystem.

This presentation will highlight the strategic role of Creates’ High NA EUV Lithography Center in advancing semiconductor R&D, while showcasing how industry sustainability principles are being incorporated into its design, construction, and operation. Creates and on-site industry partners have committed to embed sustainability throughout the center, setting an example for responsible innovation in a resource-intensive industry. The discussion will further explore industry sustainability efforts occurring in the broader context of Creates’ Albany NanoTech Complex, demonstrating how innovative semiconductor research can be aligned with environmental, economic, and societal sustainability goals. Through its leadership and long history of collaboration with industry partners, Creates is demonstrating that technological innovation and sustainability can progress together, setting a benchmark for the future of the industry.
