PFAS TRADE NAMES

The following list of trade names also demonstrates that the inventor of a particular fluoropolymer product might license out the manufacture and/or sale of the product to another company.

You can also see that some of trade names represent very large families of fluoropolymers of types, sometimes with many sub-grades in the family.

PFAS Additives & non-PFAS Polymers

One of the more important concepts to keep in mind is that non-PFAS polymers can have PFAS additives, and perhaps even residual PFAS processing aids (chemicals used in the production of the base polymer material). Because of this some non-PFAS polymers will be in scope of PFAS regulations. For example, PFBS (perfluoro butane sulfonic acid) is sometimes present in polycarbonates as a flame retardant.

The following table shows some common types of additives that used in polymers, taken from UL 746A (Polymeric Materials – Short Term Property Evaluations) Table 9.1. Of course, not all of these additives are expected to be PFAS. Examples are given of known PFAS additives.

Types of Polymer Additives (known PFAS types shown as examples)

Acid Acceptor (Scavenger)

Impact Modifier

Lubricant or Release Agent

Coupling Agent

Plasticizer

e.g., ACR-ENP-1, fluoroalicyclic  oligomer

Antimicrobial

Conductive Material

Processing Aid or Dispersing Agent

Drip Inhibitor

UV stabilizer

e.g., 5-(3-Fluoro-2-methylphenyl)-3-methylphenol CAS 1262001-16-0

Copolymer

Antioxidant

Blowing Agent

Nucleating Agent

Monomers (unreacted)

Crosslinking Agent

e.g., Rhenofluor

Antistatic Agent

Catalyst

Filler

e.g., PTFE

Metallic Pigment

Curing Agent

Compatibilizer

Colorant/Pigment (organic & inorganic)

Reinforcement

Smoke suppressant

Flame Retardant

e.g., PFBS (Rimar salt) in polycarbonates

Halogen Scavenger

Carbon black (Colorant)

Heat Stabilizer

Other polymer (in polymer blend)

Low Wear Additive

Corrosion Inhibitor

Hydrolytic Stabilizer
