A Sensor System for Fully Autonomous Driving

ABSTRACT

At Waymo, we are committed to pursuing L4 autonomous driving and beyond. Sensors for this level of autonomy require state-of-the-art technologies and complex integration of hardware and software. In this talk, we will give an overview of the custom 360deg sensor suite on Waymo vehicles and how they work together to enable the Waymo Driver. We will also share a brief history of our development from early days at Google to today’s deployment in multiple cities and discuss how our learnings have driven the design of our self-driving system. Finally, we will delve deeper into a few specific challenges for lidar sensors and explore key areas for future development.

BIOGRAPHY

Yeh-Jiun Tung, Waymo

Dr. Yeh-Jiun Tung received his bachelor’s degree in physics from MIT in 1995, and his Ph.D. degree in EECS from UC Berkeley in 2001. He has worked on OLED, MEMS, optoelectronics, display and sensor technologies at various companies over his career. He joined Google in 2013 to develop optics manufacturing for Augmented Reality.  In 2018, he transferred to Waymo and now heads the advanced manufacturing team responsible for building the lidar sensors used on Waymo’s vehicles.
