Geopolitical Outlook: Industry Impacts of US-China Competition over Taiwan

ABSTRACT

US-China strategic competition in the Asia-Pacific is indelibly linked with the trajectory of the global semiconductor market over the next five years. The future of Taiwan, one of the leading players in the semiconductor industry and a militarily vulnerable nation, is at the epicenter of this competition. By forecasting the most likely scenarios for the US-China-Taiwan trilateral relationship, as well as the feasibility of each country’s bid for technological supremacy, industry leaders can prepare for the changes that have made our world appear so volatile in recent years. Massive shifts in labor flows, state subsidies, intellectual property and cybersecurity risks, and maritime supply chains are all on the table, making geopolitical risk management less of a luxury and more of a business imperative as the world order of the last 75 years changes before our eyes.
