Fueling the Next Wave of Computing with Optical Technologies
ABSTRACT
Performance scaling, data-set explosion, and resource disaggregation and composability are driving aggressive demands on interconnect technologies. Power efficiency, latency, and bandwidth scalability are all under pressure. At the core of these challenges are physical limitations with electrical signaling technologies and products, resulting in the so-called "bandwidth bottleneck." Optical technologies can fundamentally solve the bandwidth bottleneck, but historically, optical products have suffered from immature supply chains, expensive manufacturing requirements, and a fragmented ecosystem. In this talk, we present the convergence of trends in compute applications, new optical technologies and products, and a scalable supply chain ecosystem, leading to opportunities to build paradigm shifting system architectures addressing AI/ML and cloud computing applications.
