Internship Positions at Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) 2024

AFRL offers stipend-paid internship opportunities through UES, Inc. for graduate-level university students pursuing STEM degrees and recently graduated students with a postgraduate degree. The selected interns will gain valuable hands-on experiences working with full-time AFRL scientists and engineers on cutting-edge research and technology and are able to contribute to unique, research-based projects. Graduate interns may have opportunity to collaborate with AFRL on current research and incorporate the research into their graduate work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled or recently graduated with a Masters or PhD in a scientific field
  • Ability to design, organize, and execute independent research with minimal oversight
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a small, multidisciplinary team environment
  • This position is working within a government facility and requires US Citizenship

Job Description:

  • Summer Stipend – up to $3600/per month

Graduate Student Researcher (NBMC) – Biomaterials Development and Characterization

OVERVIEW
We are seeking a motivated graduate intern to contribute to research projects in biomaterials development and characterization. The successful applicant will join a dynamic laboratory with a broad range of expertise in biomaterials, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics and biochemistry. Under supervision, the intern will design and execute experiments using techniques from these disciplines.

Productive and professional collaboration with laboratory and other personnel is also required.

  • Stipend – up to $3600/per month
  • Must work 3 consecutive months
  • Housing will be provided at the Wright State University student facilities
  • Must complete the internship between 1 April 2024-31 March 2025

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Duties may include but are not limited to: Bacterial cell culture and manipulation, purification and analysis of cellular constituents, protein expression assays, biomaterials characterization, and/or bioinformatics. The intern will assist in interpreting experimental results and therefore must keep accurate and detailed records of experimental data. Communicating research data is very important and the intern will do so in written, oral and visual formats.

It is imperative that the intern maintains a safe work environment and follows common laboratory safety policies.

Graduate Student Researcher (NBMC) – Next-gen Fibers for Smart Textiles

OVERVIEW
We are seeking a graduate intern who will have some experience with processing of synthetic or natural biopolymer into fibers, using techniques such as wet spinning, dry spinning or electrospinning. Experience with design of smart textile would be beneficial, as would work with nanomaterials and/or flexible electronics and sensors.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Support next generation fibers for textiles that will be based on a merger of biomimetic functionality and synthetically derived features to produce game changing attributes such as sense and respond, directional thermal control, environmental reporting, and human state awareness. Polymer Engineer Intern – Fall 2023

Position Description:
We are looking for a qualified intern to join our thermal interface material product development team. You will be responsible for examining raw materials when they arrive, preparing samples for testing, performing analysis on the samples according to company protocols and documenting all findings. The characterization of the developed polymers include rheology properties, thermal conductivity  and/or impedance, thermal stability, mechanical properties, adhesion and other relevant properties. We expect you to follow all safety protocols and ensure tools and equipment are maintained properly. This is a paid internship position and college credits can be offered, if needed.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience working in a chemistry or material science laboratory setting
  • Comfortable using polymer testing instruments (TGA, DSC, Rheometer, etc.)
  • Ability to keep detailed documentation in lab notebook
  • Experience defining Design of Experiments (DoE) test suites, conducting experiments, and documenting results
  • Ability to independently perform data analysis, identify both trends and flaws in data, review data with our development team, and discuss potential optimizations
  • Familiarity with polymer science and/or chemistry is a bonus
  • Enrolled in Master of Science or PhD program in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or equivalent degrees.

Mechanical Engineer Intern - Fall 2023

Position Description:
We are looking for a qualified intern to join our hardware R&D team. You will be responsible for designing and building mechanical test fixtures, testing the thermal and electrical properties of Arieca’s LMEE material architecture. These learning then will be applied in designing devices ranging from semiconductor packaging to wearable biomonitoring applications, that will enhance the computation efficiency and sensing capabilities of next generation solutions. You will be performing analysis of material samples according to company protocols, and documenting all findings. We expect you to follow all safety protocols and ensure tools and equipment are maintained properly. This is a paid internship position, and university credits can be offered, if needed.

Key Requirements:

  • Proficient in CAD software
  • Rapid prototyping and machine shop experience
  • Experience defining Design of Experiments (DoE) test suites, conducting experiments, and documenting results
  • Ability to independently perform correlation analysis, identify both trends and flaws in data, review data with our development team, and discuss possible optimizations
  • Experience working in an industrial or academic research laboratory
  • Familiarity with electronic circuit design concepts is a bonus
  • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited Master of Science or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or equivalent fields of study
