Title: Powering Sustainable Growth: Energy, Efficiency and Sustainability

Draft Abstract

As demand for AI and advanced computing accelerates, the semiconductor industry faces a dual challenge: delivering unprecedented performance growth while advancing sustainability objectives across the value chain. Achieving both goals requires a connected approach that links design innovations, energy solutions and industry collaborations.

Drawing on industry research showing that the majority of IT emissions occur during product use, the session will begin by examining how advances in AI energy efficiency can deliver significant environmental benefits while enabling continued innovation. The AMD “20x30” AI energy efficiency goal demonstrates how dramatically increasing compute performance while reducing energy consumption can create value for customers and society alike.

The discussion will then examine how many of the same principles that drive use-phase efficiency also influence manufacturing impacts. Design choices that improve yield, material utilization and product longevity can reduce energy, water and carbon emissions throughout the production lifecycle. Real examples from AMD's product carbon footprint assessments, supplier sustainability programs and product takeback initiatives illustrate how sustainability can be embedded throughout the value chain, from product design and manufacturing to product use and circularity.

Finally, the keynote will highlight the critical role of industry collaboration in scaling progress. Through initiatives such as the Semiconductor Climate Consortium and the SEMI Energy Collaborative, companies are working together to identify emissions hot spots, improve data quality and transparency, expand renewable energy access and accelerate decarbonization across global supply chains.

Concluding remarks will emphasize that sustainable growth is not determined by any single technology, factory or company. Rather, it depends on how effectively we connect decisions across the product lifecycle, from raw materials and manufacturing to product use and end-of-life management. When these connections are strengthened, sustainability becomes a multiplier for innovation, competitiveness and long-term value creation.

Justin Murrill is Chief Sustainability Officer at AMD, where he leads the company's corporate responsibility strategy, goals and stakeholder engagement. His responsibilities include ESG reporting, human rights, product environmental compliance and climate action across AMD's global operations and value chain.

With more than 20 years of experience in sustainability and corporate responsibility, Justin helps advance industry collaboration and drive global standards through leadership roles with the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), Semiconductor Climate Consortium, and SEMI Energy Collaborative.

Justin was recognized as a 2024 Top 50 Sustainability Leader by Constellation Research and is a published author on sustainability and climate strategy. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business and organizational leadership from St. Edward's University.
