Investment in power and compound semiconductor fabs is being driven by strong structural demand from electrification, renewable energy, and power efficiency applications. Wide bandgap technologies such as SiC and GaN are gaining traction due to their superior performance in high-voltage and high-frequency environments.

Power & Compound Fab Report (Published April 15, 2026)

 

Following pandemic-driven peaks, fab equipment spending is entering a cyclical moderation phase. A near-term decline is expected, followed by a rebound in 2026 and sustained investment reaching nearly US$27 billion, representing 17% annual growth. Meanwhile, power and compound semiconductor capacity continues to expand steadily, although the growth rate is gradually slowing.

 

Across the 2018–2029 time frame, the report identifies a total of 1,085 fabs and production lines worldwide, including R&D facilities, planned projects, and facilities that have closed.

 

The report indicates that 42 fabs and lines (including EPI) are scheduled to begin operations between 2026 and 2029.

 

When measured by capacity—and excluding R&D and EPI to avoid double counting—the number of volume fabs and lines in operation increases from 772 in 2026 to 781 by 2029.

The report uses a bottom-up approach, tracking projects per cleanroom facility but uses also a top-down analysis by company, region, and industry segment.

In addition, we rely on our established global network and a variety of other trusted industry sources to confirm data. We also incorporate various economic indicators into our forecast modeling, including GDP, industry revenue, macroeconomic conditions, and individual company strategies.

 

Additionally, we benchmark our data against the Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment and Materials (WWSEMS) report to refine historical data and adjust our forecast model accordingly. The WWSEMS report, published monthly, provides billing figures from a wide range of participating equipment suppliers.

 

When direct verification is not possible, or information is incomplete or delayed, we apply best-educated estimates within our fab forecast model. This model tracks each fab project in detail—monitoring quarterly construction and equipment spending, production capacities, technologies, wafer sizes, and product types. As new information becomes available, we promptly update the data to maintain accuracy and reliability.
