Critical SEMI Safety Guidelines Updated
The semiconductor industry is fueled by innovation and competitiveness. So, it is no surprise that its formative years were characterized by a lack of consensus-based industry standards--particularly ones focused on the specific safety concerns of the industry. Initially companies developed their own in-house protocols. Then, amidst multiple and often contradictory guidelines, it became practical for the industry to adopt a single, industry-consensus standard, which would reduce costs and improve safety by consolidating industry best practices.
This standard was SEMI S2, Environmental, Health, and Safety Guideline for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment.
Since its development in the early 1990's, SEMI S2 has become the globally-accepted benchmark and purchasing standard that is pervasive in virtually every modern fab and tool used in semiconductor manufacturing today, providing a set of performance-based environmental, health, and safety (EHS) considerations for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
SEMI S2 is frequently updated to reflect the increasing complexity of semiconductor manufacturing and its varied hazards. Each SEMI S2 revision brings new insights into both potential and actual hazards in the industry, which the industry has agreed needs to be addressed. This latest edition of SEMI S2 effectively captures the learnings from the industry over the past 25 years.
