FROM THE SEMI PRESIDENT

Stan Myers, SEMI PresidentJapan Earthquake: The Industry Will Respond and Rebound

The earthquake, tsunami and power plant disaster in Japan has brought great sadness to the semiconductor industry, as it has to people all over the world. Japan is a pioneer and leader in the global chip industry whose contributions are valued the world over. SEMI and our member companies extend our deepest condolences to our friends and colleagues in Japan, and to all Japanese people, for all their enormous loss.

In response to many individual SEMI member inquiries and a mandate from the SEMI Board, we are aggregating useful resources to support your intelligence gathering and decision making relative to the devastating impact of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. (more)

Semiconductor Photomask Market Forecast: $3.2 billion in 2012
By Lara Chamness, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
The worldwide semiconductor photomask market was $3.0 billion in 2010 and is forecasted to reach $3.2 billion in 2012. After contracting for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009, the semiconductor photomask market grew 10% in 2010. Key drivers in this market continue to be advanced technology feature sizes and increased manufacturing in Asia-Pacific.

Aggressive LED Fab Investment to Drive 40% Growth in Equipment Spending in 2011
By Clark Tseng, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
With the wide adoption of LED technology in LCD backlight applications, the LED industry is growing rapidly. To serve the soaring demand, the industry has attracted a huge amount of capital pouring into the LED supply chain from equipment and materials to LED epitaxy/chip fabrication and LED packaging capacity.

Alternative Energy Markets Create Opportunities for Power Management Semiconductor Technology
By Paula Doe, SEMI Emerging/Adjacent Markets
Demand for energy efficiency is creating a new growth market in power semiconductor manufacturing. Healthy demand continues for improved designs for low-voltage power management devices to reduce the energy consumption of all sorts of mobile and consumer electronics products.

Fab Equipment Spending in Southeast Asia: Growth of 108% YoY
It's a fact-- Southeast Asia's semiconductor industry is experiencing solid growth. Southeast Asia (SEA) has been a strong contributor to the global semiconductor market, contributing 7% of global semiconductor fab capacity in 2010. In terms of fab equipment spending, SEA experienced 108% growth in 2010, and another 36% growth is expected in 2011.

CAST Workshop Explores OEE and Key Contributors to Cost of Test
The Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test held a workshop on March 8 at SEMI headquarters in Silicon Valley to explore critical issues in test and identify pre-competitive activities that can advance the industry.

The ConFab 2011 Finalizes Program and Speakers
The ConFab 2011, an "invitation-only" global conference and business meeting focused on semiconductor manufacturing, has announced the final session line-up and an updated list of confirmed speakers. The event will be held May 15-18 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A Shanghai Success Story: Leading Experts Convene at CSTIC
The annual China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC) was held on March 13-14 in Shanghai, featuring a record number of 340 speakers and 740+ attendees from around the world.

PV Cost Reduction Goals Just Released by SEMI and CTM Group
Critical technology needs and cost reduction targets for PV materials, manufacturing methods and processes have been identified and targeted for yearly improvement by the 2010 ITRPV, recently released by the Crystalline Silicon PV Technology & Manufacturing Group (CTM).

SEMI Seeks Industry Nominees who Excel at Marketing and Sales

SEMI is in search of excellence. Who do you know that excels at creating and implementing marketing programs? With your nomination, that person (or group) could join the ranks of Ed Braun, Art Zafiropoulo, and Franz Janker, who have all received the SEMI Bob Graham Award.
