Momentum Building; Southeast Asia Workshop

Momentum Building; Southeast Asia Workshop

By Kai Fai Ng, president, Southeast Asia, SEMI

Since SEMICON Singapore in April, it has been nonstop activities at SEMI Southeast Asia here aimed squarely at our remapping efforts to facilitate industry development.

Development of the exciting new programs and themes for the first SEMICON Southeast Asia 2015 (April 22-24) event in Penang is underway. I am pleased to report that following discussions with fellow members and partners within the region, the Southeast Asia microelectronics community has shown keen interest in participating at this event. Please let us know if you are interested in presenting or exhibiting; more exhibition information is available here.

The initial feedback indicates next year’s event is already gaining positive momentum. In tandem with this effort, we are also encouraged by the positive response from Malaysian government agencies and partners in supporting the event. The Southeast Asia microelectronics manufacturing market accounts for more than 25 percent of the world’s assembly, packaging, and test production. The SEMICON Southeast Asia 2015 exhibition and conference will demonstrate the readiness of the industry to remain competitive in its successful segments and its willingness to explore additional segments.

This year will see the inauguration of our first SEMI Southeast Asia training workshop in Malaysia in October 2014. Entitled “The Fundamentals of IC Packaging,” the genesis of this workshop derives from the Improving Manufacturing Task Force initiative which underscores SEMI Southeast Asia’s commitment to advocate for continual talent and workforce development within the semiconductor ecosystem.  Given that it’s our first time in planning such a workshop, I would like to convey many thanks to our dedicated Technical Committee for sharing their feedback and involvement in the planning process. We are also grateful to the Regional Board for providing the necessary guidance and endorsement of the initiative.

In line with the regional expansion, we at SEMI together with the endorsement of our Regional Advisory Board (RAB), are delighted to announce the appointment and acceptance of Dr. Kamarulzaman, CEO of SilTerra as our new RAB member. With his wealth of experience in the semiconductor industry in Malaysia and his passion in the development of this sector, I am confident that Dr. K's presence will serve SEMI’s mission well towards the various initiatives in Malaysia. Please join me in congratulating Dr. K.

In addition, the 2nd annual SEMI Vietnam Semiconductor Strategy Summit will be held September 16-17, 2014 at the InterContinental Asiana Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.

We are at the center of the region’s vibrant and growing industry.  Stay tuned for further information about these upcoming events.
