The Beginning of a New Chapter

The Beginning of a New Chapter

I would like to convey my sincere thank you to all of our Members, Partners, SEMI Southeast Asia Technical Committee and SEMI Southeast Asia Regional Advisory Board for participating in one of Southeast Asia’s foremost events — SEMICON Singapore 2014.  SEMI continuously endeavours to enhance your experience with our Show and SEMICON Singapore is no exception, both in terms of the theme and the activities within the Show. In fact, this year saw an expansion in the number of booths compared to 2013.

The end of SEMICON Singapore 2014 on 25th April also marks a new beginning for SEMI Southeast Asia’s growing footprint in the region. The significance of Southeast Asia to the worldwide semiconductor ecosystem is substantial. Southeast Asia accounts for more than 27 percent of the world’s assembly, packaging, and test production.  It is the largest market region for Assembly and Test equipment and is also the second largest market region for packaging materials in the world.

SEMI Southeast Asia recently conducted a survey as a fact-finding initiative for our members and partners’ interest within the region. We found that 90 percent welcomed consideration of expansion in the region and an overwhelming 79 percent favoured SEMI expanding into Malaysia.  Given the diversity of the semiconductor ecosystem in Malaysia which represents well over 10 percent of the installed global semiconductor assembly, packaging, and test capacity, this was not unexpected.

While SEMI Southeast Asia remains the platform for cross-regional advanced technological convergence in the front- and back-end ecosystem, the SEMICON expansion to Malaysia (see article below and here: SEMICON Southeast Asia Launching in 2015) strives to serve the impending semiconductor development of the country and will focus the vibrancy of the assembly and test sector with a balance of the development of the front-end sector as well.

In continuing with the spirit of facilitating the development of the industry, SEMI Southeast Asia will be gearing up for the upcoming summits both in Malaysia and Vietnam in a few months.  Stay tuned!
