SEMI North America PV Materials Standards Fall 2012 Meeting Summary

SEMI North America PV Materials Standards Fall 2012 Meeting Summary

By Kevin Nguyen, SEMI

The SEMI North America PV Materials Committee recently met on October 31, 2012 in conjunction with the North America Fall Standards meetings in San Jose, California.   A short summary of the meeting is found in the Committee Express Report.  Detailed meeting minutes are available at SEMI Standards web site.

Document 5438, Test Method for the Measurement of Oxygen Concentration in PV Silicon Materials for Silicon Solar Cells by Inert Gas Fusion Infrared Detection Method, passed technical committee review.  Further audit and procedural review is being conducted by the International Standards Subcommittee, which is required by the SEMI Regulations. The result is expected to pass by December 2012 and the new SEMI PV Standard will be published.  By early 2013, the TF will have a total of six published analytical test methods covering PV Materials.

Furthermore, to establish a precision statement for the Gas Fusion Infrared Detection Method, the PV Analytical Test Method Task Force(TF) is conducting an interlaboratory study. Laboratories interested in participating in the round-robin testing should send a request to Patrick Schnabel (Evans Analytical Group) at pschnabel@eaglabs.com or Kevin Nguyen knguyen@semi.org.

On a less desirable outcome, document 4675B, Test Method for the Measurement of Elemental Impurity Concentrations in Silicon Feedstock for Silicon Solar Cells By Bulk Digestion, Inductively Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry, failed committee review due to a persuasive rejection. Therefore, it was returned to the PV Analytical Test Method Task Force (TF) for rework.  The document is expected to be reissued for cycle 1 ballot in January 2013. Check www.semi.org/standardsballots for ballots.

The PV Gases and Chemicals Purity TF had successfully created eighteen PV standards covering water, gas, and liquid chemicals for used in PV manufacturing.  As the group has completed all the work it set out to do, the TF has been disbanded.  If any new PV chemical or gas standardization needs arise, the TF will reactivate; contact Marty Burkhart at martyburkhart@hipuretech.com

The next committee meeting will be on April 2-3, 2013 in San Jose, CA during the NA Standards Spring Meetings.  If you have any questions or would like to join our one of our regional task forces please contact Kevin Nguyen at knguyen@semi.org .
