Formation of SEMI PV Standards Committee a Significant Milestone for the China PV Industry

The SEMI International Standards Committee, at its recent meeting during PVJapan 2011, approved the formation of a new China PV Standards Committee, which joins committees previously established in Europe, Japan, North America, and Taiwan. The proposal to form the new committee was supported by major players throughout the supply chain, including Astroenergy, GCL, LDK, Suntech, Tianwi, TianWei, Trina, and Yingli. The committee will be chaired by Dr. Guangchun Zhang, Senior Vice President of Suntech, and Ms. Jun Liu, Deputy Director of the China Electronics Standardization institute. As with all SEMI Standards ballots, all ballots will be distributed to the entire global membership of the PV Committee, ensuring that international consensus is reached before any standards are approved for publication.
As Dr. Zhang states, “SEMI has a strong reputation in China for successful standardization, which is why the China PV industry has selected the global SEMI Standards platform to develop consensus on materials, equipment, and other manufacturing areas where standards are needed to improve efficiency and reduce cost. Formation of a SEMI PV Standards Committee is a significant milestone for the China PV industry, and the committee is eager to develop many high-quality SEMI PV standards for the global PV industry.”
The China Committee’s standardization priorities will be on specifications and test method for key materials used in PV silicon, wafers, cells and modules; EHS guidelines for PV fabs; and specifications and test methods for key performance/quality/reliability indicators of PV cells, modules and systems. An activity to develop a specification for anti-reflective coated glass Is already underway; other initial work items may include: specification for packaging materials for PV modules, test Methods for polyethylene vinyl acetate used in PV modules, guide for identifying quality of monocrystalline silicon ingots, and test methods for multicrystalline silicon ingots.
Since 2007, over 500 PV industry experts in more than 20 task forces have developed and published 27 SEMI PV standards covering equipment, materials, and test methods used in crystalline cell, module and thin film manufacturing. This has been a truly global effort, and standards development has been led in each region. Notable standards (and region where primarily developed):
