A Shanghai Success Story:
Leading Experts Convene at China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC)
The annual China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC) was held on March 13-14 in Shanghai, featuring a record number of 340 speakers and 740+ attendees from around the world. Over 130 of the world’s leading experts in semiconductor technology gave speeches in the ten parallel symposia. The conference is comprehensive, covering most aspects of semiconductor technology and emerging technology areas, including LED and photovoltaic. As the largest semiconductor industry technology conference in China, CSTIC 2011 was organized jointly by SEMI and ECS.
At the conference plenary session, the keynote speeches featured: David Wang, CEO and president of SMIC; T.C. Chen, IBM fellow and VP of Science and Technology; Chenming Hu, TSMC distinguished chair professor of Microelectronics at the University of California at Berkeley; and John Lau, ITRI fellow. In addition, Dr. Allen Lu (SEMI VP and president of SEMI China) and Mr. Roque Calvo (executive director of ECS) gave the opening speeches.
Solar industry executives from Daqo, GCL, LDK, Trina and ASTROnergy joined the “Solar Silicon Materials— Opportunities and Challenges” panel discussion with more than 80 attendees. Technical experts in LEDs from Philips Lumileds and more presented at an LED-focused session and more than 70 attendees participated in a short course on “Fundamentals of High-Power White LEDs.”
Presentations from All over the World
Of the 340 papers presented, 28 percent were from the U.S., 15 percent from Europe, 9 percent from Japan while 36 percent were from China. Many of the papers presented represented leading fabs, equipment and materials companies like: Applied Materials, ARM, ASE, Dow Chemical, Flextronics, IBM, IMEC, Infineon, Intel, KLA-Tencor, SMIC, STMicro, TEL, Toshiba, and TSMC. In addition, 171 manuscripts from CSTIC 2011 passed critical review by the technical committee and have been published in ECS Transactions digital library.
Hanming Wu, CSTIC Conference Chair and senior director of SMIC said, “I am very happy to see that so many world’s leading experts from industry and academia presented at the CSTIC conference. With this excellent platform, technical managers and engineers from SMIC, HHNEC, Huali, Grace Semiconductor, Samsung, Infineon, professors and students from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, etc. can have face-to-face communication with the industry for leading-edge technology and semiconductor manufacturing solutions.”
ECS Student and Engineer Awards
Six students and young engineers won the SEMI ECS Student & Engineer Award（SESEA）at CSTIC 2011. Winners are: Mireia Bargallo Gonzalez (IMEC, Belgium), Dandan Jiang (IMECAS, China), Shiqiang Qin (Peking University, China), Nicolas Posseme (CEA-Leti, France), Jolly Zhao (KLA-Tencor, U.S.), Yuanqian Ji (Grace Semiconductor, China).
The 2011 conference was co-organized by China’s High Tech Expert Committee (CHTEC), and co-sponsored by IEEE, CEMIA, MRS and CSE. It was also supported by Shanghai Pudong Association for Science& Technology, Shanghai Pudong New Area Science & Technology Development Fund. Fourteen industry companies, including KLA-Tencor, sponsored the event.
Dr. Qinghuang Lin, senior scientist from IBM, will be the CSTIC 2012 conference chair.
CSTIC 2012 will be held on March 18-19 in Shanghai. Call for papers deadline will be September 30, 2011. ECS was founded in 1902 as an international nonprofit, educational organization concerned with a broad range of phenomena relating to electrochemical and solid-state science and technology. The Electrochemical Society has more than 8,000 scientists and engineers in over 70 countries worldwide who hold individual membership, as well as roughly 100 corporations and laboratories that hold corporate membership.
