Ready to Grow
By Heinz Kundert, SEMI Europe President
I would like to report significant progress in our industry's lobbying efforts – the recent article published in the Handelsblatt with European Commission VP Guenther Verheugen. The article clearly mirrors the main points of the SEMI White Paper released in October 2008, which were our industry's concerns about subsidizing research, the need for a level global playing field, the importance of key enabling technologies such as semiconductors, and the negative impact of regulations such as the limit of subsidies allowed for manufacturing under European regulation. The feedback from Mr. Verheugen is a big success and, we hope, the beginning of a change of thinking regarding innovation and related manufacturing in Europe. The European Commission released its Communication for High-Tech Enabling Industries on 30 September, and we will work with our members to prepare our response. If you would like to know more, please join us at the 3rd Executive Summit at SEMICON Europa where key industry leaders— together with government and EU representatives— will debate the topic of European semiconductor manufacturing competitiveness.
As you know, SEMICON Europa is next week. From historic achievements to daunting challenges— this is what we’ve come to expect within the cyclical structure of the semiconductor industry. We are in the midst of demanding economic times, but within this challenge are opportunities for the European microelectronics industry to shine even more brightly. The professional experts leading the programs and on the show floor at SEMICON Europa are an excellent resource for getting the answers you need for manufacturing issues, growing your business contacts and exploring partnerships.
You can expect SEMICON Europa 2009 to retain the best elements of past shows and to introduce unique and innovative methods of learning, exhibiting and networking. The programs are offered in four technology tracks— rich with content and presented by an excellent group of industry experts.
The popular 13th Fab Managers Forum will be offered again this year with three intriguing sessions— Equipment Lifecycle; Fab Agility and Productivity; and Energy Efficiency. In addition, there are programs for MEMS/MST, business and management, and Test and Packaging. The TechARENA is a special area on the show floor, in Hall 1, where exhibitors will present and discuss various technologies in their area of expertise.
On behalf of SEMI, thank you to all exhibitors, visitors and the many committee volunteers for your participation and support. You are the reason SEMICON Europa is a world-class event. With so much to do and so much to see, I am confident you will have a productive and valuable experience at the show!
