First SEMI Member Forum in Tel Aviv

By Theresia Fasinski, manager, Member Relations, SEMI Europe

Israel is recognized for its fast and flourishing industry ecosystem, innovations, and its mix of well established companies and countless start-ups. SEMI Europe took the first steps to gain insight into this particular high-tech hotspot, by selecting Tel Aviv, Israel, as an ideal location to hold a SEMI Member Forum (June 25-26)  to help create new global business opportunities. Laith Altimime, president of SEMI Europe sums it up by saying, “The Israeli electronics ecosystem is not only known for semiconductor manufacturing but also for its start-ups, R&D facilities, design centers and growing automotive and smart mobility industry ─ it is time to connect and explore new business opportunities.”

The event brought together experts from Europe and Israel and also hosted two highly-engaged delegations from China and Taiwan, who took the opportunity to connect to the local industry by extensive company visits throughout the country in addition to attending the Member Forum. A visit at the Intel site in Kiryat Gat was on their agenda as well as several other visits at established and start-up companies.

At the networking reception of the SEMI Member Forum on Sunday evening at the Carlton Hotel, SEMI welcomed Shlomo Gradman, CEO of ASG Ltd., who gave an overview of the Israeli high-tech industry, and Dr. Wolfgang Bernhart, from Roland Berger, who presented his study on Israel's Automotive and Smart Mobility Industry. This was an excellent start of the forum and made the audience familiar with the Israeli ecosystem.

On Monday morning, Orbotech Ltd.  hosted the participants of the SEMI Member Forum for a tour through their company facility. It was not only interesting to see their facilities but also to learn what they have accomplished during the last 30 years. Orbotech is only one of Israel’s success stories – a technology company founded in Israel and a global player ever since. The Orbotech site visit and tour was well attended and highly appreciated.

After returning to the Carlton Hotel, attendees listened to experts from the Israeli industry. Speakers from the local government and industry professionals from Applied Materials, Orbotech, Nova Measuring and many more showcased the latest developments, innovations and achievements. We learned about the challenges, the key success factors, and the innovations that are driving Israel’s microelectronics industry. While the conference started out with presentations, each one led into an active discussion. The interactive program mirrors the lively environment of the Israeli high-tech industry.

For extensive networking and creating new global business connections, the attendees enjoyed the Tel Aviv skyline and fantastic weather at the SEMI Member Forum Gala Dinner on the rooftop of the Carlton Hotel. As Yoram Uziel, technology director, Applied Materials Israel, pointed out, “Very well organized event. The meetings were an opportunity to initiate new big future collaboration.”

SEMI Europe would like to express their thanks and appreciations the speakers, the sponsors and the participants for making this event such a success. We hope to be back in the near future.
