Stampede of the Giants: Equipment Spending Growth Flat in 2012 By Christian Gregor Dieseldorff, SEMI Industry Research & Statistics In January, SEMI analyzed fab spending and capacity growth for 2012 and 2013. At that time, fab equipment spending was expected to improve from -11 percent year-over-year to -4 percent depending on announcements from key spenders. If macroeconomic factors improve and other companies adjust their capex plans, then equipment spending could even cross into positive territory. In addition, record growth is expected in 2013.
Slowing LED Market Spurs Disruptive Manufacturing Solutions By Paula Doe, SEMI Emerging Markets With the LED TV backlight market slowing, and the general lighting market yet to take off, LED makers are looking to all sorts of innovative ways to improve cost and performance to drive adoption — from disruptive new technologies to incremental improvements to manufacturing yield.

Southeast Asia Fab Capacity to Grow 10% in 2012--Leading the Packaging Materials Spending By Clark Tseng and Karen Lo, SEMI Singapore The industry forecast for semiconductor revenue growth for 2012 is expected to reach a range of 3 to 10 percent. With positive demand in the electronics sector, SEMI expects the semiconductor industry to continue growing. Singapore houses the Asian headquarters or manufacturing sites for many semiconductor makers and testing houses, like Freescale, Infineon, Micron, STMicroelectronics, Siltronic-Samsung Wafer, Intel, Micron Flash and more.
European Policy Considerations for Supporting the 450mm Supply Chain By Heinz Kundert, SEMI Europe European competitiveness in the semiconductor industry was the focus of the SEMI ISS Europe 2012 recently held in Munich. Over 200 delegates from 20 countries discussed issues of concern for chip manufacturing in Europe, including the implications of the industry-wide transition to 450mm manufacturing technologies.
SEMI Acquires Plastic Electronics Conference SEMI recently acquired the Plastics Electronics Conference and Exhibition, which has co-located with SEMICON Europa since 2010. The goal will enhance SEMI member value and advance the successful commercialization of new products in the field of organic and inorganic large-area electronics (OLAE), which promises to be a large market potential of over $50 billion by 2020.
Silicon Valley Supports Chinese Development Efforts; Opportunities for SEMI Membership Government officials and company representatives led by Li Hongzhong, Party chief of Hubei province, signed 17 collaborative MOUs (memos of understanding) with companies, research organizations and associations, mostly based in Silicon Valley. Allen Lu, president of SEMI China, and Jonathan Davis, president of SEMI Semiconductor Business, attended the “Hubei Night in Silicon Valley” event.
