FROM THE SEMI PRESIDENT
On Heading Up SEMI-- a Strong Association
Stan Myers turned over the SEMI leadership reins to me on November 15, and I am happy to report that he left us with a strong association. SEMI finances and membership continue to rebound from the industry crisis of 2008 and our member satisfaction ratings have never been higher. SEMI services and activities in all our business units continue to grow and we are well positioned for a solid year in 2012 despite some poor economic forecasts.
SEMI reported to our Board of Directors that membership grew over 7 percent to 1,940 members in 2011, primarily due to strong member retention rates and continued growth in PV and emerging markets.

Each issue covers the latest on semiconductor business news and products with topics like: nanotechnology, semiconductor equipment, wafer processing, packaging design, IC packaging, packaging technology and other issues important to professionals in the business of semiconductor manufacturing.
The Semiconductor Industry Has Lost a Hero By Jonathan Davis, SEMI I was stunned and saddened at the news of Steve Appleton's untimely passing. Word spread quickly of his tragic accident, and many recounted their experiences with the charismatic leader of Micron Technology, the last U.S. DRAM maker.
Microelectronic Manufacturing in Europe and the Middle East By Dan Tracy, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics Europe and the Middle East Area contain a diverse number of companies manufacturing IC and related devices. A recent report produced by Yole Developpement, titled the "European Microelectronic Fab Database/Report 2012," lists 316 production, pilot and R&D lines.
ISS 2012 Recap: Roadmap to Profitability Threatened by Increasing Cost, Complexity and Uncertainty Industry leaders at the SEMI ISS described a perfect storm of cost, complexity and uncertainty as the industry struggles with process engineering complexity at sub-28nm nodes, hazy EUV industrialization schedules, 3D-IC challenges, and planning for a 450mm wafer transition.

Packaged GaN LED Revenues Down; LED Growth Up from 2012-2015 as Lighting Accelerates By IMS Research After 60% growth in 2010, the gallium nitride (GaN) LED market is now expected to fall 6% in 2011 to $8.0 billion. The decline can be attributed to: a widening surplus, a decline in LED prices for backlighting, and falling LED revenues for TVs.
QD Vision Receives the SEMI Award for Quantum Dot Research Team members at QD Vision are the recipients of the 2011 SEMI Award for North America. The QD Vision team made significant progress on the integration and manufacturing processes essential to the commercialization of Quantum Dot (QD) technology.
Upcoming Webinar on March 1: Latest Developments in LED Manufacturing Despite concerns for overcapacity and falling HB-LED prices, manufacturers are continuing to invest in new technology, new equipment and added capacity for long-term competitive advantage.

HB-LED Standards Update The North America HB-LED Committee held its Fall 2011 meeting on October 27 at SEMI Headquarters in San Jose, California. The committee's progress on various standardization efforts.
State of the Union: President Obama Addresses Many SEMI Issues in Annual Speech On Tuesday, January 24, President Obama gave his third State of the Union Address to the traditional joint session of Congress. While his campaign opponent is still being decided, the President used the State of the Union platform to lay out his case for re-election.
2012: A Delicate Balancing Act By Bettina Weiss, SEMI In December, some analysts foresaw a 2012 solar market disaster as German feed-in tariffs were reduced. We asked "Is there enough global PV demand to offset the German market slump?"
