FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SEMI AMERICAS
Just Around the Corner
The early signs of spring are already here in California, and for us at SEMI that means SEMICON West is not far behind. Before too long, engineers, executives, and buying teams will be gathering at the Moscone Center in San Francisco for our annual showcase of the latest technologies and trends in microelectronics design and manufacturing.
Based on the numbers and the growing agenda, SEMICON West 2012 is already on target to exceed last year's successes. With more than 1,300 booths and over 600 international exhibitors already assigned, the show will be larger than last year's event and is on pace to sell out soon. To date, nearly 10,000 combined visitors have registered for SEMICON West and Intersolar North America, a number also well ahead of our numbers from a year ago.
The buzz this year is clearly centered on technologies that will push Moore's Law beyond the 22nm node and to its limits, with a strong interest in 450mm, EUV, and new device architectures including vertical transistors and 3D-IC. Technical programs at SEMICON West will again be showcased at the three TechXPOT presentation stages on the show floor, including the "Extreme Electronics" stage.

Stampede of the Giants: Equipment Spending Growth Flat in 2012 By Christian Gregor Dieseldorff, SEMI Industry Research & Statistics In January, SEMI analyzed fab spending and capacity growth for 2012 and 2013. At that time, fab equipment spending was expected to improve from -11 percent year-over-year to -4 percent depending on announcements from key spenders.
Slowing LED Market Spurs Disruptive Manufacturing Solutions By Paula Doe, SEMI Emerging Markets With the LED TV backlight market slowing, and the general lighting market yet to take off, LED makers are looking to all sorts of innovative ways to improve cost and performance to drive adoption.
Southeast Asia Fab Capacity to Grow 10% in 2012--Leading the Packaging Materials Spending By Clark Tseng and Karen Lo, SEMI Singapore The industry forecast for semiconductor revenue growth for 2012 is expected to reach a range of 3 to 10 percent. With positive demand in the electronics sector, SEMI expects the semiconductor industry to continue growing.
European Policy Considerations for Supporting the 450mm Supply Chain By Heinz Kundert, SEMI Europe European competitiveness in the semiconductor industry was the focus of the SEMI ISS Europe 2012 recently held in Munich. Over 200 delegates from 20 countries discussed issues of concern for chip manufacturing in Europe, including the implications of the industry-wide transition to 450mm manufacturing technologies.
SEMI Acquires Plastic Electronics Conference SEMI recently acquired the Plastics Electronics Conference and Exhibition, which has co-located with SEMICON Europa since 2010. The goal will enhance SEMI member value and advance the successful commercialization of new products in the field of organic and inorganic large-area electronics.
Silicon Valley Supports Chinese Development Efforts; Opportunities for SEMI Membership Government officials and company representatives led by Li Hongzhong, Party chief of Hubei province, signed 17 collaborative MOUs (memos of understanding) with companies, research organizations and associations, mostly based in Silicon Valley.
