CAPITOL COMMENTARY
Beyond the Fiscal Cliff: 2012 Successes; Hopes for 2013
The highly-anticipated November elections are over, and we now know that the biggest winner is the status quo, which will remain in Washington for at least the next two years. With the "fiscal cliff" and much of the rest of the work of the 112th Congress left to be done in a "lame duck" session of Congress, now is a good time to look back at what public policy issues SEMI has been working on for the past year, and what the industry can expect from Washington in 2013. While many of the issues will be the same, there is reason to be optimistic that some positive results will occur in these areas: Export Controls, R&D Funding, Solar PV, Trade, Taxes, and High-Skilled Immigration Reform.

Semiconductor Equipment Market $38.2 Billion for 2012; Recovery in 2014 By Lara Chamness, SEMI Industry Research and Statistics SEMI projects that worldwide sales of new semiconductor manufacturing equipment will reach $38.2 billion in 2012. Following a multi-year expansion period, semiconductor equipment sales are expected to moderate before posting low double-digit growth in 2014.
Heterogenous Packaging Technology Eases Integrated Photonics By Paula Doe, SEMI Emerging Markets Suppliers now see emerging heterogeneous packaging solutions for integrating photonics with electronics as a practical path forward to bring optical speeds to the semiconductor industry.
Webinar on January 17: Silicon Photonics: Disruptive Technologies Offer Long-Term Potential
Endless Possibilities of MEMS -- Viewpoint from a MEMS Foundry The MEMS industry is conflicted over the relative merits of IDM and MEMS wafer contract manufacturing. SEMI Taiwan interviewed Dr. Yu Hsian Tsai, president and CEO of Asia Pacific Microsystems (APM).
Competing in the "More than Moore" Era -- An Interview with Dr. Wei Shaojun
As the IC industry heads towards the "More than Moore" era, Dr. Wei Shaojun, leader of the China National Science and Technology, says that nothing will ever be as clear as the era of Moore's Law.
Forecasts for Electronic Gases, CMP Consumables, and Sputtering Targets What's the latest forecast for Electronic Gases, CMP Consumables, and Sputtering Targets? Quite positive, according to the Techcet Group's latest reports. Strategic Materials Conference: Presentations available (Members Only)
CAST Elects New Leadership to Address Future of Semiconductor Test The Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test (CAST), a SEMI special interest group, has elected new leadership to advance their mission to develop, accelerate and support industry-wide advances in semiconductor test.
Advances in Printed Electronics Manufacturing Featured at 2013 Flex Conference Printed and flexible electronics increasingly offer near-term solutions to lower costs, new form factors, innovative performance features for displays, lighting, PV, batteries, sensors, and other systems.
2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly By Bettina Weiss, VP, Global PV Group Rather than dwelling on well-known woes such as overcapacity, financing hurdles and a deeply depressed PV equipment market, I would like focus on what our industry has collectively achieved this year.
