The Cyber Security Law

One of the most discussed parts of China’s legislative agenda over the past 14 months has been the draft Cyber Security Law (网络安全法) (the “CSL”).  Having gone through three official drafts, the CSL was formally promulgated on November 7, 2016, and will come into effect on June 1, 2017.

The stated goal of the CSL is to protect China’s “cyber sovereignty” and preserve cyber security.  The law will regulate all network services and activities within China, including construction, operation, maintenance, and usage of networks.
