By Kai Fai Ng, president, SEMI Southeast Asia
More than 7,00 industry leaders and government officials from 30 countries gathered in Penang, Malaysia for the successful inaugural three-day SEMICON Southeast Asia 2015 conference and exhibition, the largest microelectronics manufacturing supply chain event in the region.
This year’s sold out exhibition, which grew by 35 percent over 2014, featured 185 leading process, assembly, test & packaging equipment and materials manufacturers and suppliers. Exhibiting companies included: Accretech, Advantest, Air Products, Atotech, Camstar Systems, DAS, DISCO, Entegris, Faeth, HANMI, Hiwin, Kulicke & Soffa, Lam Research, Pfeiffer Vacuum, SCREEN, SMC, Surplus Global, Tokyo Electron, UST Technology, Yaskawa, ZMC Technologies, to name a few.
“The buzz on the show floor and the number of customers we met this year at SEMICON Southeast Asia exceeded our expectations. We are very happy that we participated this year and have already signed up to exhibit again next year,” commented Andrea Leow, UST Technology Pte Ltd.
Other key events during SEMICON Southeast Asia included the Device Manufacturer Supplier Search Program, the SEMICON University job fair, EXPOArena for exhibitor product presentations, and the Eco-Village featuring a solution based ecosystem.
Content is King!
In addition to the sold-out exhibition hall, SEMICON Southeast Asia convened more than 75 programs and forums attracting standing-room only crowds of industry leaders and end-users. Key programs included the Technology Innovation Forum, Product & System Test Forum, Assembly & Packaging Forum, LED Technology Forum, Sustainable Manufacturing Forum, and the Yield Productivity & Failure Analysis Forum. Each program featured leading speakers who provided valuable content on the latest opportunities, trends, best practices, and challenges facing the microelectronics industry.
“One of the compelling strengths of SEMICON Southeast Asia is the abundance of outstanding program content presented and the high quality of industry speakers during this three-day event. We are very grateful to our regional advisory board and technical committees for their guidance and tremendous support,” stated Kai Fai Ng, president of SEMI Southeast Asia.
The inaugural SEMICON Southeast Asia kicked-off with welcome remarks from Richard Salsman, CFO & VP of Operations, SEMI, and key Malaysian government officials, including the Chief Minister of Penang, Mr. Lim Guan Eng and the Guest of Honor, Mr. Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry for Malaysia.
During his welcome remarks, Mr. Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed emphasized the importance of the electronics & electrical (E&E) market in Malaysia, stating that Penang is the hub of Malaysia’s E&E market which contributes 7 percent to Malaysia’s GDP and 39 percent of the country’s gross output in E&E products.
Mr. Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed also mentioned that Penang is strategically located in the center of ASEAN with a combined GDP of US $2.3 trillion and US $600 million consumer market – and is the home for more than 300 multi-national companies (MNCs). Many of the world’s renowned MNCs such as Intel, Motorola, Osram, Bosch, AMD, Agilent (HP), and Braun have been in Penang for more than 40 years.
Southeast Asia Remains a Key Market
Southeast Asia continues to play a vital role in the global IC industry and accounts for more than 27 percent of the world’s assembly, packaging and test production – and is the single largest market for packaging materials and equipment. In total, Malaysia represents well over 10 percent of the installed global semiconductor assembly, packaging and test capacity.
Dan Tracy, Sr. Director, Industry Research & Statistics at SEMI, speaking at the Market Trends Briefing, provided a summary of year-to-date trends and a comprehensive market outlook for the global semiconductor equipment and materials market. Tracy emphasized the importance and relevance of the Southeast Asia market and the expected continuing growth in the materials and equipment sectors. According to SEMI’s February 2015 forecast, Southeast Asia will account for approx. 26 percent of the regional semiconductor packaging materials markets and approx. 6 percent of the regional fab materials market.
Microelectronics Industry Enabling IoT
The Internet of Things (IoT) continues to be the buzz of the industry – and SEMICON Southeast Asia offered several IoT sessions. Key topics presented included new innovative technologies and opportunities (and impacts on IC packaging) and the expanding applications market, which will require development of specialized materials, processes, packaging, and test technologies.
Eric Chan, Director of Internet of Things Group, Intel Microelectronics,
presented an exceptional overview of Intel’s end-to-end solutions for IOT. Chan
highlighted case studies regarding new applications such as industrial wearables,
fleet management, building energy systems, and water irrigation systems as
examples of long-term growth opportunities for the microelectronics industry.
He also stated that IoT will drive business transformation and will create new
opportunities for the overall industry supply chain.
Excellent Networking Opportunities!
SEMICON Southeast Asia offered ample onsite and offsite networking opportunities for both visitors and exhibitors. One of the main highlights of this year’s event was the “Romance of the Past, Passion of the Present, and Power to the Future” networking dinner and reception hosted by InvestPenang, which took place at the Khoo Kongsi Clan House in downtown Penang.
This unique and historical venue provided the ideal backdrop (not without some heat and humidity!) for an evening of fun, food, music, and great conversation!
The decision to move SEMICON Southeast Asia to Penang, Malaysia proved to be highly beneficial for SEMI members and the Southeast Asia regional market. This year’s event attracted numerous key visitors from throughout Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Overwhelmingly, both exhibitors and visitors were pleased with the quality of this year’s overall event and have indicated their strong desire to return to Penang in 2016.
As indicated earlier, the global IC industry will continue to grow moderately, with Southeast Asia accounting for more than a quarter of the world’s IC packaging – and the largest single market for packaging materials and equipment.
Bill Mazotti, Vice President, Worldwide Quality and Reliability, Altera, stated that “SEMICON SEA 2015 brought a tremendous amount of energy, technology and insights to Penang. The atmosphere at SPICE Arena was buzzing with excitement as attendees engaged in understanding the latest new technologies to enable manufacturing solutions from efficiency improvements to advanced processing.” I look forward to next year!”
SEMICON Southeast Asia is the largest microelectronics manufacturing supply chain event in the region. Therefore, mark your calendar and plan to attend SEMICON Southeast Asia 2016, April 26 – 28 in Penang, Malaysia!
