Jim Bowen to Receive SEMI Sales and Marketing Excellence Award

SAN JOSE, Calif. — December 21, 2015 — SEMI today announced that Jim Bowen has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the SEMI Sales and Marketing Excellence Award, inspired by Bob Graham. He will be honored for outstanding achievement in semiconductor equipment and materials marketing during ceremonies at the SEMI Industry Strategy Symposium (January 10-13, 2016) in Half Moon Bay, Calif.

Jim Bowen, retired, will receive the 19th SEMI Sales and Marketing Excellence Award for his contributions and leadership in the Automatic Test System (ATE) industry that resulted in the development of early product marketing and sales methods that broke the $1,000,000 barrier for semiconductor equipment prices.

Under Bowen’s direction in the 1970s, Fairchild Test Systems became the number one producer of ATE worldwide. He created a system of selling value rather than technology. His marketing contribution was successfully “merchandising” automatic test equipment for the customer. This emphasized the importance that the customer put on testing, and validating their commitment to quality. His efforts also moved the visibility of test equipment from the manufacturing floor to the board room ─ elevating the world’s vision of testers and the importance of testing in the eyes of the customer. His merchandizing approach was later adopted by most other semiconductor equipment manufacturers.

Bowen’s employment of face-to-face level selling from the customer’s technical staff to senior management helped Fairchild lead the ATE industry for over ten years. He insisted engineering development take market forces into full account. Importantly, his staff went on to other companies in the industry and helped them prosper.

The SEMI Sales and Marketing Excellence Award was inspired by the late Bob Graham, the distinguished semiconductor industry leader who was part of the founding team of Intel and who helped establish industry-leading companies such as Applied Materials and Novellus Systems. The Award was established to honor individuals for the creation and/or implementation of marketing programs that enhance customer satisfaction and further the growth of the semiconductor equipment and materials industry.

Eligible candidates are nominated by their industry peers and are selected after due diligence by an award committee. Previous recipients of this SEMI award include: Terry (Tetsuro) Higashi (2015), Winfried Kaiser (2014), JC Kim (2013), Dan Hutcheson (2012), Franz Janker (2011), Martin van den Brink (2010), Peter Hanley (2009), Richard Hong (2008), Richard Dyck (2007), Aubrey C. (Bill) Tobey (2006), Archie Hwang (2005), Edward Braun (2004), Steve “Shigeru” Nakayama (2003), Jerry Hutcheson and Ed Segal (2002), Jim Healy and Barry Rapozo (2001), and Art Zafiropoulo (2000).
