Utility Scale Solar Power Projects
Fellow, Bechtol Corporation
A number of different solar power technologies have been demonstrated with peak output of a few megawatts or less. Scaling up these applications to facilities that produce many hundreds of megawatts presents a number of challenges and opportunities for the engineering and construction community. The Bechtel Corporation is currently in the process of constructing both the largest photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar (SC) power plants in the world. Both with peak power outputs greater than 300 megawatts. Design and construction challenges associated with both of these projects will be presented. The potential future of PV versus SC from the perspective of the engineer and constructor will be discussed.
