Gallium Nitride on Silicon based power conversion devices are being developed and introduced to the market. These new devices enable revolutionary improvement in power electronics system efficiency, density , and cost. The market potential is between $10B and $20B assuming low manufacturing costs are realized , for example by use of low cost heteroepitaxial growth and CMOS standard wafer processing (such as is the case for International Rectifiers’ GaNpowIR® technology platform). This presentation will cover the requirements to realize this opportunity and will provide an update on the current state of technology development to show how those requirements are being met. Further, the related opportunity and challenges for electronic materials and processing equipment will be discussed.
