Roles and Responsibilities

Samuel Tuan Wang is chief analyst for semiconductor foundries, semiconductor supply chain and other related areas on Gartner's Semiconductor Manufacturing team within the Technology and Service Provider Research group.

Previous Experience

Mr. Wang has been part of the semiconductor industry for more than 35 years and is familiar with the technology, operation, marketing/sales and supply/demand dynamics of the industry. In his early days of career with Hughes Aircraft and Intel, he has issued various patents on nonvolatile memories and written some classical technical papers on floating-gate devices. Mr. Wang was the founder of International CMOS Technology, a fabless company specializing in the design and manufacture of EEPROM, EPROM and PLD. During his 10-year tenure at International CMOS Technology, he held the position of executive VP of Technology. In 1997, Mr. Wang contributed to the successful IPO debut of 8x8 Inc., where he was the VP of Operations in charge of the fabrication of MPEG2 video compression SOC chips as well as videoconference systems. In the last nine years prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Wang was president of SMIC Americas, where he successfully built a sales team from nothing, generating $900 million revenue in 2009 for SMIC, the largest wafer foundry based in China. In April 2004, during the trade talks between the U.S. and Chinese government headed by Ms. Wu Yi, the Chinese vice premier, Mr. Wang represented the Chinese semiconductor industry in signing an agreement with major U.S. equipment vendors, with a business value of US$6.0 billion. Mr. Wang has been the vice president of the Asian America Manufacturing Association, an organization to promote the high-tech manufacturing collaboration between the U.S. and Asia. Invited by many organizations including GSA, SEMI, IEEE, Stanford University, National Ventura Capital Association, U.S. Department of Commerce and Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, Mr. Wang has been speaker or panelist for various topics on semiconductor industry.
