Managing the Talent Crunch — SEMI Singapore Workforce Development
By Li-san Chan, SEMI Singapore
SEMI Singapore and its regional advisory board (RAB) members are making efforts to attract talent and develop awareness among students from polytechnic and secondary schools. The last SEMICON Singapore University program hosted 109 students. The Young Talent Outreach Program Video Competition also attracted participants from universities, polytechnics, institutes of technical education and junior colleges. The next project involves planning a lab that showcases the importance and applications of semiconductor devices and technology, which will appeal to a wider range of students.
Why is SEMI Singapore focusing so intently on workforce development? According to the Economic Development Board of Singapore, the fixed assets investment commitments in 2011 are expected to create 3,500 skilled jobs. The industry demands talents in design, manufacturing, processing, R&D, quality, purchasing, marketing, sales, human resources, finance and other skilled areas. Companies such as Micron Semiconductor and Infineon continue to make significant investments in Singapore, and such talents are required to support these businesses.
Beyond the beautiful skyline of its financial district, Singapore is a city-state where manufacturing contributes a substantial portion to the nation’s GDP. Top engineers with extensive experience are in demand to fuel the growth and transform Singapore into a world class innovation-driven electronics hub. Government agencies have embarked on programs to attract talent to the semiconductor and electronics industries. The efforts not only pertain to the local workforce, but also to Singaporeans overseas experienced foreigners. “Contact Singapore” is organizing Singapore’s first virtual career fair for the semiconductor sector, to reach out to experienced semiconductor engineers from different areas of the world. Engineers can simply log in from their PCs onto the virtual platform, upload their resumes, and start interacting with company representatives or other jobseekers online.
The virtual career fair is convenient and easy-to-use. Jobseekers can interact with potential companies they are interested in from the comfort of their homes, without the hassle of travelling. For employers, a virtual recruitment event significantly reduces costs.
In the U.S., the virtual recruitment fair concept has caught on, as it connects people from different states without the need for travel. This is the first time Contact Singapore is using a virtual recruitment platform to reach out to those living in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Titled the Singapore Electronics Virtual Career Fair 2012, the event will take place on August 21-22. Many notable companies in the semiconductor sector will be represented at the virtual fair, including Broadcom, Infineon, Intel, Lantiq, Micron, Silicon Laboratories and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC).
