Michael Watson, Senior Director, Marketing & Product Applications, Cree

Mike is the head of Marketing and Applications for the Cree LED Components business unit where he oversees product marketing, marketing operations and product applications. Mike joined Cree in 2010 from Advonce, where he was the company’s CEO. Prior to Cree, Mike spent more than 15 years in alliance/partner development, strategic planning, project and product management with a heavy focus on mobile and wireless technology initiatives. He led the project that created the world’s first voice/data phone; built and led the team that created the world’s first universal mobile payment service in Korea; and co-founded a company that built the first transactional network that makes traditional media such as TV, print and radio, as interactive and targetable as Internet-based media. In addition, Mike co-found the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) and presided as it president for 14 years; created the concept and first LED PLCC product at Hewlett-Packard Optoelectronics; and locally led the establishment of the Daimler-Benz North American Research and Technology Center. Mike holds degrees from Northwestern in materials engineering; holds four (4) issued patents in optics and wireless communications; and has served as a board member of the Center for Telecom Management (CTM) at the University of Southern California (USC).
