New International PV Roadmap Edition Released; Fischer and Metz Receive PV Group Award
BERLIN, Germany — 27 March 2012 — The 2011 edition of the International Technology Roadmap for PV (ITRPV) was released yesterday during the PV Fab Managers Forum (March 25-27) in Berlin. Leading European, American, and Asian manufacturers of silicon wafers, solar cells and modules contributed to the latest roadmap updates. The roadmap informs suppliers and customers about expected technology trends in the field of crystalline silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic — intensifying the dialog on required improvements and standards.
Critical areas identified by the ITRPV revolve around the goals of cost reduction and efficiency increases in advanced crystalline cell and module manufacturing. Economies of scale alone are not sufficient to compete in a global market environment. Efforts to reduce manufacturing costs tend to be dominated by reduction of the manufacturing costs per piece of wafer, cell, and module (assuming a constant cell area) while the contribution of increased cell efficiency is less pronounced. Only a combination of increased module conversion efficiency and significantly reduced manufacturing costs will enable the PV industry to reach the overall cost targets.

Also, during the Fab Manager Forum yesterday, Markus Fischer (Q-Cells) and Axel Metz (Schott Solar) were awarded the first-ever European SEMI PV Group Award for their extraordinary work as co-chairmen of the ITRPV roadmap group.
Markus Fischer is director of R&D Processes at Q-Cells. Fischer studied physics at the University of Technology Dresden and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1997 from the University of Stuttgart. After working in the semiconductor industry for Siemens, Philips and NXP in different engineering and management functions, he joined Q-Cells SE in 2007. As director of R&D Processes, his responsibilities include: c-Si cell process development and production support, Q-Cells research line, as well as Q-Cells module test line.
Axel Metz is director of R&D solar cells at Schott Solar. Metz received an M. S. in applied physics from the Technische Universität Clausthal, Germany in 1994, and a Ph.D. from the University of Hannover, Germany, in 2000. He performed his Ph.D. research on highly efficient crystalline silicon solar cells while working at the Institut für Solarenegieforschung Hameln/Emmerthal (ISFH). From 1998 to 2001, he headed the photovoltaics department of ISFH. Since 2002, he has worked at SCHOTT Solar, and is currently director of R&D solar cells.
