SEMICON Europa Logs Record Attendance in First Co-location with productronica in Munich

Europe strategically positioned to enable SMART applications worldwide

By Serena Brischetto, SEMI Europe

Munich was magic for SEMICON Europa last week as the exhibition both co-located with productronica and sold out for the first time on the strength of outstanding programs, networking events, technical presentations and business opportunities. The SEMICON Europa record attendance (since 2010) came against a backdrop of a thriving supply chain and record semiconductor industry performance in Europe. On track to reach $1 trillion by 2030, European semiconductor sales topped $400 billion in 2017 for the first time, with the Internet of Things (IoT), Automotive, Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G and Quantum computing key growth drivers. Automotive Electronics alone is forecast to exceed $300 billion globally by 2020.

The high turnout at SEMICON Europa and productronica – 14-17 November 2017 at Messe München, Munich, Germany – demonstrates the growing importance of business networking and global cross-collaboration, supporting SEMI mantra of “Connect, Collaborate, and Innovate.” The show’s success validates the decision to move to the new co-location in Munich. Europe is strategically positioned in the global electronics supply chain to enable SMART applications as strong investment in its semiconductor industry continues.

In their opening keynotes, Maria Marced, president of TSMC Europe; Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec; Carlos Mazure, EVP and CTO of Soitec; and Frank Rinderknecht, founder and CEO of Rinspeed addressed the future growth drivers in the vertical segments.

Other show highlights:

  • A show record of more than 30 national and international journalists covered the kickoff event thanks in part to two joint SEMI press conferences  (Messe München and productronica, and a Dresden microelectronics cluster.) Jochen Hanebeck, Management Board member at Infineon Technologies AG, delivered a welcome speech during the SEMI Networking Night on Tuesday, 14 November.

  • The SEMI Standards Award winners were honored on opening night.
    • SEMI Standards International Collaboration Award – Dr. Astrid Gettel (Shin-Etsu Polymer, previously GLOBALFOUNDRIES) and Dr. Jan Rothe (GLOBALFOUNDRIES)
    • SEMI Standards Merit Award – Dr. Arnd Weber (SiCrystal AG)
