The SEMI EHS Executive Committee, comprised of senior executives from SEMI corporate member companies, guides the direction of global EHS activities at SEMI. The Committee, which has met several times in 2008, is continuing its long-standing focus on providing SEMI member value through long-term planning and near-term execution.

This year, Mary Puma, chairman and CEO of Axcelis Technologies, was named the chair of the committee. As part of Puma’s tenure, the Committee proposed and accepted the following actions:

• The Akira Inoue Award process will be modified to include an active search component for identifying award nominees. This outreach effort will include SEMI current and past board members Don Mitchell, J.C. Kim, and Shigehito Ibuka.
• The Global Care program framework will be used as the vehicle for launching a comprehensive and focused SEMI sustainability program. The first step will be to develop a “toolbox” for engaging small to medium-sized SEMI members in sustainability activities. Essential program elements are to include the entire supply chain; articulate the business case (value proposition); focus on energy conservation, water conservation, chemical management and solid waste reduction and recycling; teach companies how to calculate usage, initiate reduction efforts and record improvements; publicize successes; utilize larger member companies as mentors and role models; and to use EICC or Responsible Care to promote supply chain sustainability principles.
