Inside Look at the August 2017 SEMI FabView

By Christian Dieseldorff and Dan Tracy, SEMI

About a year ago, SEMI, a leading supplier of independent semiconductor market research, announced SEMI FabView, a mobile-friendly, interactive version of its popular World Fab Forecast, a quarterly report for electronics supply chain stakeholders and analysts. SEMI FabView tracks spending and capacities of over 1,100 facilities, including over 60 future facilities, across industry segments from Analog, Power, Logic, MPU, Memory, and Foundry to MEMS and LED fabs.

Out of the many daily updates, the following shows the notification feature for FabView subscribers of some of the major changes made this month (August):

  • SMIC: New 300mm fab in Shanghai: Two phases
The SEMI FabView forecast separated the planned 300mm fab by SMIC in Shanghai into two physical phases: SN1 with estimated 35,000 wpm (started construction in October 2016), and SN2 with an estimated construction start date in 2020. Total investment for both phases was announced to be US$ 10 billion.
  • Push out production schedule for AOS in China
SEMI pushed out the anticipated production schedule for AOS in Chongqing, China (Fab # 3896) by six months from 2H18 to 1H19. Phase 1 of this Fab is planned for Discrete/Power with 20,000 wpm. The Fab started construction in February 2017. Total investment was announced with US$1 billion for 50,000 wpm. AOS is also building an assembly and test facility at the same site, which is expected to begin operation (2H18) before the Front-end fab.
  • Change of owner of 6-inch fab in England
In August 2017, II-VI Incorporated acquired Kaiam Corp., the 6-inch GaN facility in Newton Aycliffe, England (near Newcastle). The 300,000 square foot facility offers GaAs, SiC and InP device capabilities.
  • New LED fab in Nanchang, China
Changelight announced a new GaN LED fab in Nanchang, in Jiangxi province. Total investment will cover two phases. SEMI estimates construction start by end of 2017 and start operations begining of 2019.
  • New 12-inch fab by Hua Hong in Wuxi, China
Added a new 300mm fab planned in China. Hua Hong Semiconductor signed an agreement with the Wuxi government and National IC industry investment fund to set up a 300mm Foundry fab in Wuxi. Construction begins in 1Q18, and production is expected to start in 2019.
  • Added new 5-inch Power Fab in Hefei, China
Added a new 5-inch (125mm) facility by AnhuiRiChips in Hefei, China. The facility started operation in CY2Q17with a planned installed capacity of 500,000/year (42,000 wpm).
