SEMI Global Update—July 2009 “From the President of North America”

Focus on the Future

We’re all concerned and thinking about industry issues— sometimes in the middle of the night. But even then, I remind myself of the progress happening in the industry. Take GLOBALFOUNDRIES, for instance. Breaking ground in New York for what they say will be the most advanced fab in the world. It’s proof that the industry can grow on American soil.

Other companies are looking ahead and preparing for the future as they learn how to mitigate supply chain risks and address critical technology issues.

With SEMICON West just around the corner (July 14–16), I hope that you will think about the importance of the issues and the role that discussion plays. Consider attending one or more of these forums:

  • Foundry Summit(July 14): After a huge drop in orders in Q1 this year and Q4 last year, major foundry vendors are all seeing a rebound. Will foundries return to business as usual? Or has the downturn altered technology roadmaps, supply chain strategies and capital spending plans? The Foundry Summit is a 2-hour panel discussion on the market strategies, technologies, capital spending, and strategic plans of the world's major chip foundries. Michael Wright(CEO, Advanced Inquiry Systems) will moderate panelists from Chartered, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, SMIC, and others.
  • Supply Chain Dynamics in a Challenging Economy(July 16): The immense pressure to drive down costs combined with the current economy results in a powder keg environment. Companies must balance cost concerns while managing a volatile environment for critical materials shortages and price increases— on top of worries about the companies populating the supply chain. Hear the experts discuss what’s keeping them awake at night and how they will mitigate their risk. Bruce Rhine(Chairman of the Board, Nanometrics) will moderate with panelists from Air Liquide Electronics, Applied Materials, Intel, KLA-Tencor, and PRTM.
  • ITRS(July 15): Participate in the latest updates of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). The ITRS Keynote Panel will discuss the challenges facing the industry and how to address them to ensure that they do not become show-stoppers. George Scalise(President, SIA) will moderate with panelists from: Applied Materials, ASE Group, ATMI, Micron, and Qualcomm.

SEMICON West is an excellent opportunity to hear from the experts, talk with others about the issues, and bring them to the forefront. And these are just three of the programs at SEMICON West that may interest you.

I hope to see you there.
