Session 11: FHE Applications I

Scalable Sensor Fusion Platform for Multi-Modal Human-Machine Interface Applications
Wednesday, June 21, 2017
10:50 AM - 11:10 AM

Proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) applications including health/wellness monitoring, sports/fitness training, gaming and augmented reality is driving the need for advanced multi-parameter sensing and intuitive human-machine interface solutions. The paradigm shift will lead to the convergence of hardware, software and system-level technologies across sensors, actuators, signal processing, computation, wireless connectivity, data analytics and visualization.

This presentation describes a novel scalable sensor fusion platform architecture that integrates flexible hybrid/printed electronics based devices, MEMS devices and silicon electronics. The platform provides key reconfigurable functions including multi-parameter sensing (spatial force/pressure distribution, multi-axis acceleration and multi-axis angular rate), sensor data fusion and wireless connectivity. Solution processable functional materials and printed electronics manufacturing are used to fabricate distributed force/pressure sensing elements on flexible substrates. MEMS devices are implemented to achieve sensing of multi-axis acceleration and multi-axis angular rate. Mixed-signal data acquisition, power management and wireless connectivity are implemented using silicon electronics. Firmware algorithms provide real-time processing of sensor data fusion, data analytics and visualization of the force sensing and motion sensing parameters.

The presentation will conclude with a live demonstration of a wearable implementation of the sensor fusion platform that provides multi-parameter motion sensing and augmented reality visualization.
