First Collaboration of Korea and Taiwan Flat Panel Display (FPD) Committees

Joint Committee Leaders Meeting Focuses on Information Sharing, Future Plans

On October 12, 2009, leaders of the SEMI Standards Korea FPD Metrology committee (Jongseo Lee/Samsung Electronics, MeeRyung Cho/KILT, and SanKyoo Jeon./KILT) and Taiwan FPD committee (Mao Sheng Huang/ITRI, Li-Fen Tien/ITRI, Kuo-Chung Huang/ITRI, and Yuen-Li Lai/TTLA) gathered at Samsung Electronics in Korea to collaborate on and harmonize their regional activities.

Since the FPD industries in Korea and Taiwan have many similarities, Korea and Taiwan FPD related committee leaders realized the importance of cooperation on their Standards activities. Therefore, when Jongseo Lee (co-chair of the Korea FPD Metrology Committee) visited Display Taiwan, he suggested that the committee leaders consider how to collaborate. For the first step of this collaboration, these regions’ leaders decided to have a joint meeting.

In this meeting, the primary foci were sharing technical information and discussing standardization plans on topics such as 3D display terminology, Local dimming LCD measurement for LED back-lit displays, color breakup (CBU) Measurement methods and Electronic paper/flexible displays.

They also discussed how to add value to SEMI Standards, especially for FPD. They reached consensus that new areas such as E-paper and 3D display would be good to approach. With this in mind, FPD committees in both Taiwan and Korea are considering starting E-paper related standard activity in the near future, on topics including image sticking and reflectance measurement. The possibility of coordination and harmonization with other standards development organizations was also addressed.

As a result of this meeting, the FPD related committees in Korea and Taiwan are building strong relationships and finding ways to improve together.
