SEMI PV Group– DOE Workshop on c-Si Terrestrial Photovoltaic Cells
Arizona State University at the Polytechnic campus
Student Union building
Mesa, AZ
Wed May 13th, 2009
8.30 a.m. – 6.30 p.m. MST
Background
The U.S. Department of Energy [DOE], through Solar America Board of Codes and Standards [ABCs], recently completed a study report on Crystalline Silicon Terrestrial Photovoltaic Cells – Supply Chain Prequalification Specifications, by Dr. TamizhMani, Director of ASU’s PV Reliability Laboratory.
“The study report recommends a thorough discussion, by an appropriate standards committee, on the content of the proposed standard; requests comments from the stakeholders, especially the cell and module manufacturers; and recommends the development of additional supply chain specification standards for the other module components such as encapsulant, backsheet, junction box, cables, glass superstrate and framing material.”
This Joint SEMI-DOE PV Cell Workshop will explore expanding the demographic scope and support for developing useful Cell standards. It may develop that a SEMI document will be a cell specification template, while other organizations produce a Prequalification Specification utilizing the SEMI cell specification format. Care must be taken to ensure this activity does not involve duplication of effort among related international standards groups.
Goal
- Discuss DOE-Solar ABCs’ Study Report on c-Si PV Cell Specification
- Examine PV Testing @ ASU-TUV Rheinland and AAPS STAR facilities
- Recommend future PV Cell Specification actions
