TOKYO, Japan – October 3, 2006 – SEMI Japan today announced further details of the SEMICON Japan 2006 exposition, including a gala to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the exhibition. Registration for SEMICON Japan 2006 is now available on the SEMICON Japan Web site at

This year marks the 30th anniversary of SEMICON Japan. Last year's exposition had 1,600 exhibitors from 27 countries/regions and approximately 55,000 visitors, including those who attended co-sponsored events, as opposed to the first SEMICON Japan which hosted only 157 exhibitors. SEMICON Japan is currently the largest exhibition for the global semiconductor industry.

In 2000, SEMICON Japan set an exhibitor record with 4,394 booths. 2006 is expected to surpass that number with a projected 4,500 booths.

"SEMICON Japan is the world's largest exhibition of the most advanced manufacturing technologies, equipment and materials supporting today's semiconductor industry, and has grown in tandem with Japan's semiconductor industry since 1977,” said Takashi Kumagai, president of SEMI Japan. “I am confident that visitors to this year’s exposition will gain strong insight into the latest technological innovations and information from the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers.”

SEMICON Japan 2006 will feature four major areas of focus including front-end process equipment and parts, front-end process facilities and materials, end-to-end exhibitions across front and back-end processes, and back-end equipment/facilities/parts/materials.

SEMICON Japan will feature an Innovation Hall consisting of five pavilions focused on MEMS, Nanotechnology, Photovoltaic Generation, Manufacturing Engineering, and Ventures. In addition, each pavilion will feature both a main stage for pavilion-related special seminars, tutorial sessions and workshops, as well as a dedicated stage for exhibitor product and technical presentations.

In addition to the 30th anniversary of SEMICON Japan, this year also marks the 25th anniversary of the STS, and the 10th year of the SEMI Microsystems/MEM Seminar. Details of the anniversary are as follows:

Gala for SEMICON Japan 30th Anniversary
In celebration of the SEMICON Japan's 30th anniversary, we will hold a commemoration gala on December 4, 17:00 - 21:30, at the Imperial Hotel in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan. This gala will consist of commemorative speeches and a dinner party. Speakers will be Dr. Kazuo Inamori, founder and chairman emeritus of Kyocera Corporation, and Dr. Ryoji Noyori, Nobel Laureate for Chemistry and president of Riken. A sit-down dinner will follow the presentations. During the dinner, the annual Akira Inoue Award for excellence in environment, health and safety will be presented. The Akira Inoue award was established to honor the significant EHS contributions of the late Mr. Akira Inoue, ex-president of Tokyo Electron Ltd., and former member of the SEMI International Board of Directors. The prize will be presented to individuals in the industry or academic circles in recognition of their outstanding contributions in EHS to the semiconductor industry and society as a whole.

25th Anniversary of the SEMI Technology Symposium (STS)
The annual SEMI Technology Symposium has been held in conjunction with SEMICON Japan since 1982, and will observe its 25th anniversary this year. To commemorate the occasion, a special session entitled "Innovation toward a Post-Scaling era" will be held on December 6, 10:00 - 17:10, at the International Conference Hall in Makuhari Messe.

10th Anniversary of the SEMI Microsystems/MEMS Seminar

The SEMI Microsystems/MEMS Seminar has been held in conjunction with SEMICON Japan since 1996. It will mark its 10th anniversary this year, when it convenes on December 6, 9:30 - 17:30. A dinner party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the event will be held on December 6, 18:30 - 21:00, at The Manhattan hotel, Mihama-ku, Chiba, Japan. The guest speaker will be Professor Masayoshi Esashi, of the Micro/Nano-Machining Research and Education Center, Department of Nanomechanics, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, who has been involved in the SEMI Microsystems/MEMS Seminar programs as Program Chair since its inception.

A variety of co-sponsored events, including many technical and market seminars are also planned.

In addition to the above anniversary events, the SEMI Standards Program, one of the most important activities within SEMI, will have approximately 60 standards meetings and 11 programs providing presentations of up-to-date standards and related technical information. There will be a standards award ceremony and SEMI Standards friendship party on December 8, 18:00-20:00, at the Hotel New Otani Makuhari.
