SEMI Honors Senator Jeff Bingaman for Government Leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 12, 2010 – SEMI today presented Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) with the industry’s 2010 North American Government Leadership Award, which recognizes policymakers in the United States who have demonstrated outstanding leadership on issues and policies that support U.S. microelectronics and photovoltaic manufacturing.

The award was presented at the Senator’s Capitol Hill office by SEMI North America Advisory Board Chairman and MKS Instruments CEO and President Leo Berlinghieri, accompanied by a group of SEMI member executives participating in the association’s annual Washington Forum.

“SEMI is pleased to present the award to Senator Bingaman this year,” said Jonathan Davis, president of SEMI North America, “He is one of the most knowledgeable senators about the semiconductor industry and is a champion of innovation, trade and tax policies that support the microelectronics and solar industry sectors in the United States. He stands strongly for American competitiveness and was a leader in the successful effort to include the important manufacturing tax credit and new alternative energy provisions in the stimulus bill.”

Bingaman is the Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and a member of the Senate Finance Committee. He spearheaded energy legislation that was passed by committee in June 2009, which includes provisions for a renewable energy standard and the creation of a “Green Bank.” He is a proponent of innovation and technology goals, and was a leading supporter of the America Competes Act. He has represented New Mexico as a Senator since 1983 and previously served as the state’s Attorney General.

The SEMI North American Government Leadership Award was established in 2004 to recognize policymakers in the United States that promote pro-innovation policies. Recipients of the award are selected by the SEMI North American Advisory Board, and the award is presented in conjunction with the SEMI Washington Forum, one of the organization’s annual executive meetings with elected legislators and Federal officials in Washington, D.C.
