SEMI REPORTS SECOND QUARTER 2009 WORLDWIDE SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT FIGURES; BILLINGS OF US$2.69 BILLION

SAN JOSE, Calif. – September 8, 2009 – SEMI today reported that worldwide semiconductor manufacturing equipment billings reached $2.69 billion in the second quarter of 2009. The billings figure is 13% percent lower than the first quarter of 2009 and 66% less than the same quarter a year ago. The data is gathered in cooperation with the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) from more than 125 global equipment companies that provide data on a monthly basis.

SEMI also reported worldwide semiconductor equipment bookings of US$2.95 billion in the second quarter of 2009. The figure is 58% less than the same quarter a year ago and 83% greater than the bookings figure for the first quarter of 2009.

“Spending for the first half of 2009 is comparable to spending reported in the early 1990s,” said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. “While 2009 is an extremely challenging year for the industry, it is encouraging to observe improvement in equipment bookings over recent months.”

The quarterly billings data by region in millions of U.S. dollars, year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter growth rates by region are as follows:
