Rapid Growth Projected for Chemicals and Materials in Solar Cells/Modules

The market for advanced chemicals and materials used in PV solar cells and modules will decline in 2009 to $2.3 billion before resuming strong growth to approximately $15 billion by 2015.
PV Cell and Module Chemical and Material Demand
Overall, the value of the chemicals and materials, excluding polysilicon, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 34% over this forecast period. Thin film consumables, including gases and encapsulants will grow at the highest rates, above 50% CAGR, whereas more commoditized materials used in silicon wafering and crystalline silicon cells will have compounded growth rates of around 20% per annum.
The driver of growth in the PV market will be the global end market demand for solar power, which is expected to grow from 5.7 GW to 36 GW over the same time period. Linx-AEI sees continued success for crystalline silicon cells. However, Linx-AEI is projecting higher compound annual growth rates for thin film solar technologies in general. This is due to the fact that the multiple thin film technologies, including a-Si, tandem cell, CdTe and CI(G)S each has unique attributes which make it suitable for different applications in differing regions.
