The Silicon Reclaim Wafer Market is expected to be $441 million in 2011

SEMI Industry Research and Statistics
The worldwide reclaim wafer market is estimated to be $585 million and 38 million wafers in 2008. By 2011, the market is expected to reach $441 million and 36 million wafers. Given the current economic climate and ensuring semiconductor downturn, pricing of all wafer diameters is currently under severe pressure but over the forecast period, downward pricing pressures are expected to be especially intense for 300 mm wafers. The reclaim wafer market is served by an estimated 32 suppliers globally. While smaller, local reclaim companies continue to hold on, it is expected that the industry will experience significant consolidation in the future as there are simply too many suppliers for this market size.
The silicon reclaim market for smaller wafer diameters (smaller than 125 mm) remains a steady though small part of the market. 150 mm wafers represent a respectable portion of the reclaim market, 11% by revenues. The number of 200 mm reclaim wafers peaked in 2007 and is steadily declining as 200 mm fabs come off-line. In terms of volume, the 200 mm reclaim market is expected to recover somewhat in 2010 as some capacity, decommissioned in 2008 and 2009, resurfaces.

The number of reclaimed 300 mm wafers increased by 31% in 2007 over 2006 but declined 1% in 2008. The 300 mm wafer reclaim demand is expected to continue to contract in 2009 as device manufacturers throttle back capacity and find innovative ways to decrease their need for test wafers. The current forecast does expect a recovery for 300 mm reclaim wafers after 2009, although at modest rates.
The Japan region is the largest reclaim market in terms of both revenue and number of wafers because of the prominent position of the reclaim companies there.

Taiwan is the second largest market region for the reclaim market, followed by North America. An interesting quirk of the silicon reclaim market is the relative weakness of South Korea, given its sizable IC manufacturing base. It is believed that the majority of South Korean reclaim is conducted by Taiwanese and Japan-based suppliers.
A recently SEMI published report, Silicon Reclaim Wafer Characterization Summary, provides details on the 2008 silicon wafer reclaim for the semiconductor market and provides a forecast to 2011. Seven regions of the world are covered in this report including North America, China, Japan, Europe, Korea, Taiwan, and Rest of World (ROW). Market estimates for reclaim wafers include semiconductor applications including equipment and IC manufacturing markets.
