Monday, July 12, 8:00am-5:00pm
Global Care Sustainability Practitioners Workshop at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, 55 Fourth Street, San Francisco, CA), Event Code: GCSPW
Description: Governments, activists, and the media have become adept at holding companies accountable for the environmental and social consequences of their business activities. The general population, regulatory community and investors are now expecting that companies conduct business activities today in a manner that not only ensures their economic success but also preserves the earth’s resources and viability for future generations. As a result, sustainability (sustainable development, corporate social responsibility) has emerged as a top business imperative for companies in every country. The concept of sustainability joins two important ideas: 1) that protection of the environmental and preservation of earth’s resources does not preclude economic development; and 2) that economic development must be socially and ecologically viable now and in the long run. Increasingly, EHS organizations have been handed the responsibility for developing, implementing and managing corporate sustainability programs and activities. Unfortunately, many EHS professionals do not have the background or knowledge base needed for this new role. This workshop will provide an overview of sustainability concepts, terms and key knowledge areas necessary for the EHS professional to begin assembling their sustainability skills “tool box.”
Registration: SEMI Members and Non-Members $200

Energy Conservation Workshop at San Francisco Marriott Marquis (55 Fourth Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA), Event Code: ECW
Background: In 2009, in collaboration with industry partners, SEMI launched a new initiative to identify the drivers of energy conservation efforts within semiconductor manufacturing. At SEMICON West 2009, SEMI hosted an Energy Conservation Workshop as the first step of this initiative. During the 2009 Workshop, participants addressed these questions:
- What are the current obstacles for energy conservation? (Problem Statement)
- What can industry do to address these obstacles? (Solution / Objectives Statement).
This year’s Energy Conservation Workshop will be a follow up to the 2009 Workshop and will attempt to answer three additional questions:
- What are possible strategy options for implementing these solutions? (Strategy Statement)
- What are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOTs) for successful implementation of these strategies? (SWOTs Statement)
- What are specific next steps to move forward on these strategies? (Next Steps Statement)
The 2010 Energy Conservation Workshop will include the following sections: Association Presentations, Supply Chain Presentations (Individual Companies), Panel / Roundtable Discussion / Conclusions
Who Should Attend: Professionals who are responsible for energy conservation activities in their company will find the Workshop useful. This may include: Operations directors / managers; Engineering / design managers; Procurement directors / managers; EHS managers; Product stewardship managers

Delivering on the Promise of Sustainable PV Manufacturing at the Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco (888 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA), Event Code: SUBPV
Description: Sustainability in the PV industry is a “win-win” proposition. An industry that produces clean energy in an environmentally responsible manner is a public relations coup and a magnet for socially responsible investment firms. However, for the PV industry to live up to its commitment of responsibly producing clean solar energy, EHS and sustainability risks need to be better understood and managed. On an industry wide basis, a thorough examination of the safety environmental burdens posed by the PV manufacturing processes needs to be undertaken and a clear strategy and direction articulated and enacted to ensure sustainability risks are engineered out of the manufacturing processes and supply chain, or are effectively managed.
Agenda: SEMI / PV Group, First Solar, SolarWorld USA, Applied Materials, Linde, AltaTerra Research, NGOs, Panel Discussion
You Will Learn
- Drivers (business case) for sustainability in the PV manufacturing supply chain
- Current urgent sustainability needs
- Important sustainability needs in the 5-year and 10-year future
- Activities needed to advance sustainability in PV manufacturing
- Current activities
- Activities needed to be developed and time frame
- Path forward
Who should attend
- EH&S and sustainability professionals from PV manufacturers
- Equipment and materials suppliers
- Green tech professionals
- Supply chain managers
- Facility managers
- PV organizations, especially those active in recycling, take-back programs
