Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test (CAST) Joins SEMI as Special Interest Group
The Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test (CAST) will join SEMI as a special interest group to better manage and accelerate industry progress on critical test issues. By joining the association, CAST members will benefit from significant administrative efficiencies, SEMI global presence and staff resources, SEMI International Standards support, and greater recognition and impact for the CAST agenda. Once it joins SEMI, CAST will transfer its governance structure and agenda to the association, and will discontinue operations as a separate non-profit entity.
Established in 2008 by semiconductor device makers and test industry suppliers, CAST was designed to engage in, and resolve, common industry issues related to higher test equipment utilization, lower costs, and greater standardization and return on test-related R&D. Current CAST members represent a range of automated test equipment (ATE) companies, integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), fabless and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) companies.
Since its formation, CAST has formally expressed a desire to align its interests with an existing industry or professional association, and it is anticipated that the special interest group will engage with other industry groups on behalf of CAST and SEMI members in order to maximize participation.
“By joining SEMI as a special interest group, test suppliers and their customers throughout the world will be able to effectively collaborate on pre-competitive standards across company boundaries,” said Don Edenfeld, Manufacturing Test Equipment Development Manager at Intel Corporation, and CAST Co-chair. “By utilizing SEMI International Standards, global relationships with organizations in every region, and other resources, member company resource investments can be highly focused on execution of the technical agenda and achievement of results.”
Special Interest Group objectives include:
1. Promote pre-competitive collaboration with emphasis on manufacturing process cost, efficiency and yield improvements,
2. Research, develop and promote international standards that enable industry productivity improvement, including enabling efficient and effective interoperability and accelerated development and deployment of test solutions,
3. Define and measure benchmark criteria for quantifying end-user process efficiency and effectiveness, and identify opportunities to improve that efficiency via collaborative efforts,
4. Act as a representative and an advocate for the members, with a focus on fostering a better understanding of their strategic value to the semiconductor industry.
Charter CAST supporters include (alphabetically): Advantest, Amkor, Infineon, Intel, LTX-Credence, Qualcomm, Roos Instruments, Teradyne, and Verigy. Additional information regarding CAST can be found at: www.semi.org/cast.
