New LED Manufacturing Programs Help SEMI Members Know More, Do More, Sell More

SEMI has partnered with leading LED organizations around the world to help SEMI members understand, penetrate and serve the high-growth high-brightness LED market. SEMI is partnering with both Yole Développement and Strategies in Light to bring HB-LED manufacturing issues to the forefront. On February 22, SEMI is partnering with Strategies in Light on a Manufacturing Workshop in Santa Clara, California. On February 9, March 2, and March 23, SEMI and Yole Développement are partnering on a webinar series on HB-LED manufacturing.

And, to reach the emerging powerhouse buyers in LED manufacturing in China, SEMI will organize the second annual LED Manufacturing Pavilion and program at SEMICON China on March 15-17, 2011. Last year, buyers from 25 LED fabs attended the program; this year, participation is expected to soar.

See below for more information on these valuable opportunities to expand your business in the long term, transformational trend to solid state lighting and other HB-LED applications.

Webinar Series: “HB-LED Manufacturing Growth & Transition—Challenges, Solutions & Opportunities”

The SEMI—Yole Développement 3-part webinar series on HB-LED manufacturing will take place on February 9, March 2, and March 23 at 10:00am Pacific (1:00pm Eastern). This seminar series will be among the most comprehensive overviews of LED manufacturing ever presented. The series, HB-LED Manufacturing Growth & Transition: Challenges, Solutions and Opportunities, will cover materials, front end manufacturing and assembly/packaging/test operations in three sessions. This webinar series is an opportunity to learn about the latest technology and manufacturing trends, key challenges in LED cost reduction and productivity challenges, and technology demands.

  • February 9: Substrates & Raw Materials: Status quo?; Sapphire, SiC; Pending crunch?; Indium/Gallium; Trusted friend!; Silicon progress
  • March 2: Front End Manufacturing: Capacity explosion! Epitaxy; Efficiency gains?; Fixing droop effect; Process evolution?; Patterning, Laser lift-off etc.
  • March 23: Testing, Binning and Packaging: Submount choices?; Si vs. Ceramic; Good results?; Testing & Binning; Collective packaging!; C2W, WLP, WL Optics

The webinars are presented by Philippe Roussel, Ph.D. Yole Développement. He leads the Compound Semiconductors market analysis department and also led the development of the 2008 Yole LED Manufacturing Report. Yole Développement is the world leader in the analysis of the microtechnologies and compound semiconductors markets. Yole engages in in-depth analysis of the HB LED market and will issue comprehensive reports on all key aspects of LED manufacturing in 2011.

Strategies in Light Manufacturing Workshop: “Transforming the LED & Lighting Markets” February 22 Discount for SEMI Members

SEMI is sponsoring the four-hour LED Manufacturing Workshop on February 22, as part of the 12th annual Strategies in Light Conference and Exhibition to be held in Santa Clara, California, on February 22-24, 2011.

To fulfill the promise of large LED market penetration in a variety of applications ranging from LCD display backlights to general illumination, the cost of large volume LED production must continually be reduced, both at the chip and packaged device level. This workshop will explore in depth the advances in LED manufacturing technology that will be needed to reduce the cost of HB LEDs. Topics to be addressed include:

  • The potential for process automation
  • Yield management
  • Metrology
  • Move to larger substrates
  • Adapting existing semiconductor facilities to LED manufacturing

Peter Singer, editor-in-Chief of Solid State Technology, is an organizer and moderator of the LED Manufacturing Workshop event which is sponsored by SEMI. Manufacturing Workshop presenters include Thomas Uhrmann, business Development manager at the EV Group; Mike Plisinski, VP and GM at Rudolph Technologies; Ardy Johnson, VP Corporate Marketing at Rudolph Technologies; Ravi Kanjolia, CTO at SAFC Hitech; James Brodrick, Lighting Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Energy; and William Quinn, Chief Technologist at Veeco Metrology.

SEMI members receive a $40 discount for the Manufacturing Workshop. To register for the workshop and take advantage of the discount, download the registration form and deduct $40 from your total invoice, indicating you are a SEMI member. LED Manufacturing Pavilion at SEMICON China, March 15-17

Over the past five years, the Chinese government has invested over $200 million in R&D support for LED production technology, standards, and application development. More than 20 new LED fabs were announced in 2010, with more than 1,000 MOCVD manufacturing systems projected to be installed by 2012. China is currently installing more than one million LED lighting systems in 21 cities, of which 400,000 were installed through 2010.

These facts are certain to make China the “center of the world” in LED manufacturing for the coming decade. To make the valuable contacts, visibility and reputation to participate in this long-term buying cycle, the LED Manufacturing Pavilion will bring ideas, buyers, government officials and suppliers together at SEMICON China. Exhibiting, sponsorships and match-making opportunities are available. Act quickly. For more information, visit
