Bending, Transparency and 3D: Three Key Words for New Display Technologies

This year, global LCD-TV shipments are expected to reach 173.3 million units, up more than 20 percent from 143.4 million in 2009, according to iSuppli. Driven by a government-guided incentive system to promote energy-saving products in Japan, as well as the transition to digital broadcasting, the LCD-TV market shows robust expansion. With the introduction of the iPad and iPhone, global touch panel shipments will likely exceed 10 million units this year also.

Three Key Words

With these favorable trends, innovative technology developments are expected to show significant progress in this autumn to further propel the LCD market to grow. The innovations are summarized in three key words:

  • Bending – Flexible displays enabled by the evolution of backlights and manufacturing processes will appear on market. LCD, OLED and PTA (plasma tube array) technologies will expand the applications by being bendable. The displays will be much easier to carry and capable of being placed on a curved surface such as digital signage around a pillar.
  • Transparency – It is just wonderful to see a transparent LCD panel with a transparent backlight. Transparent OLED panels are also realized by the development of transparent light emissive materials. In the not so distant future, a glass window itself will transform into a television screen by simply turning on the switch.
  • 3D Format – Most of the current 3D TVs offer 3-dimensional vision by wearing of liquid crystal shutter glasses, but much lighter polarized glasses will be also in practical use to obtain the stereoscopic vision. While the brightness of 3D LCD panels steadily increases, other panel technologies such as OLEDs and laser projectors are also accelerating the advancement. In addition, the naked stereoscopic vision by lenticular lenses will become a reality soon.

Global FPD Partners Conference is the only annual conference dedicated to senior executives involved in strategic decision making in the FPD industry.

These on-going innovations will be shown at FPD International in this autumn in Japan along with other innovations such as the oxide semiconductor TFT technology, advanced electronic paper and touch panels.

Meet Top Five LCD Makers from Japan, Korea and Taiwan at FPD International 2010

A comprehensive exhibition and conference on flat panel displays (FPD) will be held on November 10 to 12 in Japan. This event, FPD International 2010, will be the only exhibition where you can meet the top five LCD makers— AUO, Chimei Innolux, LG Display, Samsung Display and Sharp— on the same floor.

Organized by SEMI and Nikkei Business Publications (Nikkei BP), a Japanese media company, the event will showcase FPD panels, manufacturing equipment, materials and components, and related services and technologies from regions worldwide. The exhibition, along with its programs such as “FPD Summit” and “FPD International Forum”, is highly acclaimed by international FPD experts and market analysts.

Focused Exhibits on 3D Displays, E-Paper and Touch Panels

This year’s exhibition will feature three focused exhibit areas:

  • 3D Displays 2010” will showcase the leading edge products for 3D displays through collaboration with Ultra-Realistic Communications Forum (URCF).
  • At “E-Paper 2010”, you will find the latest solutions for e-papers of which application expands to e-books, price tags and digital signage.
  • If you are interested in touch panel modules and related components, do not miss “Touch Panels 2010” where suppliers around the world will exhibits their touch panels and enabling products and technologies.

In addition to the three focused areas mentioned above, two regional pavilions for Taiwan and Germany will showcase the products and technologies from these leading regions of the FPD industry. The event will feature printed electronics exhibits that are expected to dramatically decrease manufacturing costs in the future. Concurrently with FPD International, the Imaging Society of Japan will hold an international conference on e-paper, “ISEP 2010” where it will discuss its technologies and applications for three days in the English language. Also, the Electronic Paper Consortium will report its recent study on the popularization of the e-paper technology at Electronic Paper Symposium.

Executives at Samsung Electronics and LG Display Will Talk about the Next Step

The keynote addresses will be given by top executives of the global leading companies, Samsung Electronics and LG Display, about the next steps to move the FPD industry forward. Other topics to be addressed in the FPD Summit will include future perspectives of e-newspapers, 3D, and innovative news/media business models.

FPD International 2010 Forum will explore the trends and possibilities of the emerging market of innovative displays. The forum will cover 3D displays, next-generation FPD technologies, touch panels, FPD materials and market forecasts.
