Industry Leaders Line Up to Support to SOLARCON Korea

Top Exhibitors and Industry Groups Participate in First Annual Event

Momentum builds for the inaugural SOLARCON Korea 2009 as industry leaders in photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing and solar energy products, systems and services have signed on with exhibits, sponsorships and technical programs. SOLARCON Korea will be held from January 20-22, 2009 in conjunction with SEMICON Korea. It will be Korea’s leading exposition serving the entire solar energy supply chain, including PV cell and module manufacturers; equipment, materials and components suppliers; and solar energy and related products for deployment in residential, commercial and utility installations.

SOLARCON Korea 2009 is the first regional industry event focused on photovoltaic development in Korea. The country’s strong supply chain and investment position in semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing are expected to be leveraged into a leadership position in the global PV market. In addition to their strong export capabilities, prompted by significant government incentives, Korea is also expected to Asia’s leading consumer of PV cells, modules, and panels, further accelerating regional supply chain growth.

$50 Billion Market Size by 2010

The Korean government is driving a long term plan to build PV industry for an alternative energy source and an export opportunity, by investing in R&D and market development, with a $50 Billion Market By 2010. By 2010, Korea demand is expected to reach 800MWp, making the country the world’s fifth largest demand market. By 2012, demand is expected to reach 1300 MWp with a peak year of 450MWp of installations in 2011.

“The Korea PV market is extremely diverse with major participants in all stages of the value chain from polysilicon to panel,” said HD Cho, president of SEMI Korea. “Both thin film and polycrystalline manufacturers are growing rapidly and PV demand is coming from residential, commercial and utility markets. Currently there are over 200 PV power plants over 100 Kw producing 39MW.”

PV cell manufacturers exhibiting at SOLARCON Korea include Shinsung Holdings whose 2008 capacity is estimated at 50 MW. System suppliers include Conergy, Kyundo and Kuze. Joining the top equipment and wafer/ingot manufacturers will be Ulvac, Nexolon, Neosemitech, Zeus, HIT, MMT, and many others.

Internationally renowned solar expert Professor Eicke Weber will provide the opening keynote at SOLARCON Korea 2009. Dr. Weber is the director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and a professor of physics and applied sciences at the Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany. Weber has an international reputation as a materials scientist and one of the world's leading researchers in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Held at the Seoul Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) in Seoul, Korea, registration for SOLARCON Korea 2009 opens November 10. Co-located with the region’s largest microelectronics focused event, SEMICON Korea 2009, it is the largest event of its kind in South Korea and brings approximately 500 exhibiting companies and 30,000 visitors together to exchange ideas and create new opportunities.
