Call for Participants: Secondary Equipment and Services Research

The secondary equipment and services market is getting increased attention as semiconductor manufacturers ramp up to more advanced process nodes and technology. SEMI has established a special interest group — Secondary Equipment, Services & Technology Group (SESTG) — to provide a worldwide support program for secondary equipment resellers, users, and service providers. As part of its mission, SEMI/SESTG has joined with Semico Research Corp. to embark on a research study to provide ongoing data and analysis that defines the secondary equipment, services and technology market. This study will determine the revenue generated from the sale of the secondary equipment to an end user.

As semiconductor manufacturers convert fabs to larger wafer sizes and ramp up to more advanced process nodes and technology, their older equipment outlives its usefulness to them. Equipment also becomes available as companies close a fab or exit the industry. This older equipment has value to other companies within the industry.

Some manufacturers will use older equipment to fulfill the need for lagging or non-leading edge semiconductor production. This is particularly true for the MOS general purpose logic, microcontroller, analog mixed signal and RF, and MEMS markets. Over the next five years, these products will experience a unit CAGR of over 15 percent.

Over 400 fabs utilizing mature process technologies on 200mm and 150mm wafers exist. These fabs need continual upgrading, expansion and maintenance. The continued use of secondary equipment creates an opportunity for companies that sell, finance, resell or refurbish the equipment. There are many channel and supply chain participants involved in the secondary equipment market. This study will determine the revenue generated from the sale of the secondary equipment to an end user.

SEMI/SESTG and Semico Research will provide objective and credible data and analysis of the secondary equipment market. By combining SEMI’s ability to conduct market surveys with Semico’s market research expertise, a new series of data and analysis products will be offered by SEMI/SESTG. Upon survey completion, data on the size of the secondary equipment market by region, equipment and vendor type will be available.

Semico Research is a marketing and consulting research company founded in 1994 by a group of semiconductor industry experts who have improved the validity of semiconductor industry forecasts.
