SEMI Foundation Mission and Vision

The mission of the SEMI Foundation is to support education and career awareness in the fields of high technology. Through scholarships and career exploration programs — SEMI High Tech U for high school students, and SEMI High Tech U Teacher Edition — the Foundation strives to:

  • Enhance the perception of the semiconductor and high tech industries
  • Stimulate interest in high tech
  • Connect with industry leaders in the community
  • Provide activities and experiences that motivate and build confidence
  • Establish networking opportunities beyond the initial High Tech U experience

With these goals in mind, the Foundation encourages students to stay in school, take more math, science, and technology courses — and discover that they can have a bright future in high tech industries

High Tech U Launched in the Pacific Northwest Celebrates 100th Program

The goal was to educate and excite kids about careers in high tech. The result was something no one expected.

The Pacific Northwest chapter of SEMI created and delivered the first High Tech U program (then called “workforce development institute”) as a career exposure program for students in March 2001. Few could have imagined that this inspiring and life-changing experience would catch on world-wide and touch the lives of more than 3000 students.

Now a program of the SEMI Foundation, High Tech U has been developed into a respected curriculum for high school students and teachers and has been presented in seven states across the U.S. as well as in France, Austria, Japan, The Netherlands, and Singapore. In the process we’ve built confidence, broadened horizons, and helped shape tomorrow’s high tech workforce.

Originally hosted by LSI Logic of Gresham, Oregon, Norm Armour was a driving force in opening the doors of industry to show high schoolers just how cool jobs in high tech can be. It is fitting that the 100th High Tech U milestone takes place back in Oregon where it all began with a group of committed volunteers. We’ve come full circle, and are especially proud that this history-making event is an all-girl’s program, reflecting the industry’s commitment to reaching out to females and other socio-economic groups that are under represented in high tech careers.

This 100th program is hosted in Hillsboro, Oregon by Applied Materials, Intel, Portland Community College, Rock Creek and SolarWorld. The SEMI Foundation gratefully acknowledges the power of the many Pacific Northwest volunteers whose creative energy helped to power this vision to reality. Joined by the enormous support and generous sponsorship of industry companies and academic institutions, a dream has become reality.

About SEMI High Tech U

High Tech U provides students with an intensive, three-day, industry-led introduction to the high tech industry, potential career paths, and educational requirements.

Students will participate in several hands-on activities that focus on topics including statistics, nanotechnology, solar and alternative energy technologies, mathematics, and problem solving. Students will also participate in mock interviews and hear from a panel of area colleges and universities about local educational options. The program culminates with a graduation. See below for upcoming programs and application information.
